I passed :)

Yesterday I passed Silver Moves, and (finally) the Canasta Tango and Rhythm Blues.

On the dances, my comments ranged from good edging, to adequate pattern and timing, to being slightly ahead of the rhythm on the Canasta. I was just SO happy to pass these after missing them the first time I tested them. I started the Canasta off beat in the introductory steps, but picked it up again when the actual dance steps started.

I think some people were interested in hearing about Silver Moves, so here it is. 2.7 is passing.

As best as I can remember from the test sheets:

-Judge One gave me 2.7 on everything except the LFO-RBI 3s, for which she gave me 2.8.
-Judge Two gave me 2.6 on the 8-step Mohawk and Cross Strokes, 2.7 on both sets of 3-turns, and 2.8 on the spirals and power pulls.
-Judge Three gave me 2.6 on the 8-step Mohawk, 2.7 on the Cross Strokes, 2.6 on one set of 3-turns and 2.7 on the other set (I can't remember which was which), 2.8 on the spirals, and 2.8 on the power pulls. (I may have a couple of these mixed up - I might have gotten 2.8 on cross strokes and 2.7 on power pulls).

On the 8-step Mohawk, I got comments that I was stiff on the mohawk and that I needed to push more. This is my weakest move. My hips do not like to turn out to get that outside mohawk! Plus it involves rhythm, and I am rhythmically-challenged

On the Cross Strokes, one judge said my forward ones needed a little work but that my back ones had good knee bend. The other two judges noted that I was scratchy on the back cross strokes (I tend to hit my toepick on those) but that the forward ones were fine.

LFO-RBI and RFO-LBI 3s: On the very first 3-turn, the LFO (easiest one of all!!), I put my foot down on the turn! I couldn't believe I did that. I did the rest of the pattern fine, and at the end of the test, the judges asked me to reskate just the LFO-RBI side. I did, and did fine (and got a 2.8 on them from one judge!).

RFI-LBO and LFI-RBO 3s: One judge really liked my RBO 3s. Another said that I was changing edge a bit on one of the 3s (I can't remember which 3). And one noted that a couple of my LFI 3s were scratchy (I skidded the first two LFIs on the turn).

Spirals: Good comments from all judges. Got an extra .1 from two of them on this move

Power Pulls: Good comments. Mostly they said there was good power on this move.

So, that's it! Oh, I had a weird stumble when I went out to warm up on the 8-step. Glad I got that out of the way before the actual test And further proof that the judges watch more than just the test elements - one judge noted that I bobbed up and down on my forward stroking

That is great news - considering your horrible ankle-injury and prolonged recovery! I am inspired!!!!!!

Congratulations, Morgail!

Thanks for posting the comments. I think we are skating twins - lol - I have the same problems on those moves. I'm not expecting to pass the 8-step on my next attempt - I have tried everything possible to stop scratching on steps 6, 7, and 8 - pulling my shoulders back, keeping my back shoulder down (as opposed to scrunched up to my ear) and arm checked, bending knees and ankles, leaning into circle, etc, and I still scratch! Plus, my cadence is usually uneven.

I also tend to hit my toe pick on the back cross strokes, but my forward ones are good (the fact that you passed gives me hope ) and I tend to change my edge on the BO 3's. I'm hoping to be marked above on the spirals (I was last time) and possibly the power pulls, but I think realistically that I'm just not fast enough on those.

That's so funny that we have the same problems! I'm really happy to be done with that 8 step mohawk. I had issues with steps 6-8 on it too - mostly I stepped out too widely. I finally fixed those, but couldn't ever really get the outside mohawks perfect.
You know, I always wondered why the spirals were on the silver level, but now I'm happy that they are! Gives us an opportunity to get some higher marks and make up for the 8-step and the back cross strokes
