Young skater- lost her lutz!
Is this very common? My 7 year old daughter has been skating for about 2 years. She passed all the basic skill levels through FS 6 several weeks ago. She had the lutz for a while- it was actually one of her best jumps.
Now suddenly she cannot do it- she gets around but is not landing it anymore. I have never seen her so frustrated and it really has seemed to shake her overall confidence. Any tips? |

Yes, it's normal to achieve/lose/master jumps. Usually, the "loss" is caused by technique or body changes. When a kid goes through a growth spurt, it takes a bit of time for them to get used to the new height or weight and their technique goes a bit "off."
Mention it to her coach so they can work on it together during the lesson. BTW, have her blades been sharpened?

I am worried about her because she chose to skate up to Beginner (well balanced program) for our state games in July rather that stay in Basic Skills FS6, and I'd like to see her get her confidence back. |

Good luck to her, then. Add some off-ice core-building exercise, like crunches and sit ups. That'll help her carry the new height more easily.

good idea- she did say they were doing that in one of her off ice sessions. I appreciate the input, it will help her to know that this happens to other kids too.
