What to do with old costumes?

My kids have done skating shows and competitions for years. Our synchro team is almost done for the season and while the outfits are cute, they won't fit any of the girls much longer. Several have already outgrown the skirts and shirts. We were talking about donating them.

What do you do with outgrown skating outfits?

Our club has a dress sale a couple of times a year, where members can bring their "gently used" skating apparel to sell. Its great for the sellers and the purchasers!

I've sold some of dd's either at club skate swaps or on Ebay. Donating them is a good idea if you don't want to deal with selling them.

I've donated old practice clothes that weren't too ratty, but when it comes to competition costumes and other things, I'm such a pack rat. I have every single old synchro costume, team travel uniform, and pair of skates I've worn since about 1990 (my sister used some of the skates and costumes when she was little, but she only skated for about 4 yrs). Some of the costumes have sentimental value because they were from years my team won national medals, others are so hideous I'd probably have to pay someone to wear them. Actually, when I was coaching synchro, skaters who came late to practice had to wear something out of my "ugly dress box" during practice as a punishment. Most of the skates were too broken down to sell, although I did loan them to friends when we went to open skate. There is no way I could get rid of my old Team USA jacket from our internationals or my old college skating club jackets.

I do re-use more recent costumes from the past 4 yrs that fit me, and I constantly wear the club jacket of my last synchro team (that I quit after '08) even though it's not my home club any more.

If you have a special olympics/adapted learn to skate program, I strongly encourage donating anything you may have laying around to them. They are always looking for costumes and things to give the kids for practice, shows or competitions.

Ryan Jahnke is starting a new website called www.myskatingmall.com where people and clubs can sell gently used items and help raise money for the clubs. Check it out.

Hi

Maybe you can consider giving these old costumes (if they are still pretty new) to charities; or putting them up on e-bay for sale.

Reviving an old link, but I'm wondering where people are selling things these days?

I put some things on eBay because they had free listings and got some really weird inquiries, and asking for lower prices than my starting bid (what, $24.99 for a stoned adult sized dress is too much?) and more recently I've put things on myskatingmall and will give that a try.

I'm also wondering if it's the wrong time of year to be selling costumes and skates.

Our club has a used dress sale once or twice a year as a fundraiser. We keep 25% of the sales prices and give the rest to the parent. Keeps the dresses recycling through and it's always so funny to see a dress DD wore when she was 10 or so on someone else. Now she's so big that nothing she has fits anyone else and no one has anything for sale that fits her! Oh well, we still make money.

When I lost a lot of weight, I just gave mine away-there were only a few girls/women at the rink that would fit into mine and it worked out. My skating club also had a used dress sale and I did sell a few things there but there aren't many women that wear my size so most of my stuff came back home. Ebay is good as well.

I second the post about www.myskatingmall.com. Great idea to help out vendors, parents, and local skating clubs. Everyone wins!

Depending on the pattern of the dress and the location of the stones, there's a good chance you can take old dresses in and re-use them as training or even still competition dresses now?
