footwork

Jumps are not to be included in footwork, right? My coach has included a waltz-1/2 loop-salchow in the first half ot the ice where the footwork is...and i just spoke with someone else and it seems that it is not supposed to be there...is that correct? I may have to call USFS to double check that.

THanks, m-gro

I think jumps of under one revolution were considered "highlights" and OK to be added to footwork. So you can include waltzes, stag jumps, split jumps, half loop. I've seen many footwork sequences with waltz jumps, but they are not technically waltz jumps with an entrance and landing, rather they are quick hops built into the steps.

In your case, the footwork would not start until after you land the salchow.

When you say "under one revolution" you mean 1/2 jumps? So the waltz-1/2 loop would be okay, but not the salchow attached to the end?

That would be correct. I've seen some really cool footwork include 1/2 loops, falling leafs, split jumps, hop-over-crosses, tap toes, mazurkas and on and on...

I've certainly seen half-revolution jumps included in step sequences - one of my coach's skaters nearly fell on the half flip he'd included in hers yesterday morning and gave him the evil eye.....

Be careful with the half loop. My coach just came back from a seminar on the new judging system, and said that they were told that a half loop is considered a jump pass because it is a full revolution jump.

Therefore, if you had a half loop in a footwork sequence, and also did your maximum allowable other jumps, the last jump would not count.

You can do any half jump or unlisted 1-revolution jump as part of your footwork, but no listed jumps (so the salchow is out).

For example, in my last program, I started with a "half axel", which is a 1-revolution jump that takes off forward and lands forward (picture a bunny hop with 1 revolution). But since it's an unlisted jump, it is not considered a jump. I also did a split jump right in the middle of my footwork.

Skater1964, is that an update to IJS? I thought it was on the unlisted jump list.

Yes, the thing about the half loop is a little surprising, because the half loop is always specifically given as an example of an unlisted jump, even in the most recently published rule clarifications for judges, technical specialists and coaches.
However, any other listed jump CAN be landed on either foot and will still count as that jump. Judges have the option of deducting grades of execution (assuming IJS judging) for jumps landed on the "wrong" foot, but it doesn't say they are required to. It would be interesting to see if any skaters start purposely landing jumps on the left back inside edge and doing a salchow as the second jump in the combination.

Chiming in it's the same with the walley, it's a full revolution jump but an unlisted jump that garners no credit(as a jump) and can be done in footwork as well, same with the 1/2 loop, a bell axel or 1/2 axel, etc..... these unlisted jumps may also be added as entries into jump passes and supposedly makes the jump difficulty go up, like a bauer or spread eagle into a jump.

Man, I miss the days when skaters put walley's in their footwork sequences. They are so cool to watch.

Speaking of unlisted jumps that are more difficult than listed jumps. . . Has anyone else ever noticed a 1-1/2 flip being used as a connecting move? It is the coolest thing ever! I did a double take the first time I saw it and had to rewind and watch it in slow motion to figure out what the heck it was! (It's a flip jump with 1/2 revolution extra so you land forward on your right toepick and push off forward onto your left foot).

Didn't Evan Lysacek or Matt Savoie have two walleys in a row in one of their recent programs this past season (and they were the kind that rotate "opposite" of their usual jumping direction)?

I think it was Savoie. We've got some kids at our rink who do two walleys in a row, then do one in the opposite direction into a double or triple lutz. Very cool!!
