Competition Hair Styles!!!
My competition is getting super close so i've been working out the last minute details an I realized I have no idea how to do my hair! It's about three inches past my shoulder with long bangs. Any ideas or pictures would help. Also, are skaters permitted to wear ribbons and headbands?

You can wear whatever is going to hold your hair back or in place, but be sure that what you use isn't going to fall out while you skate. Try putting your hair in the style you want and skating in it before the comp to see if it works.
I have straight hair that is about shoulder length and gets very fly-away-ish (and static-y, too) so I always tie it back in a sorta bun with one of those elastic ponytail holders that you buy in the grocery store, and then wrap a scrunchie (your dress should come with one) around the bun to tuck in the loose ends. I'm sure there's a much better way of putting one's hair up, but I (or my mother, when I was younger) was never very good with hair styling (it's a good thing I didn't skate as a kid - lol) so I never learned the hair tricks. You might want to ask one of the skating moms at your rink for suggestions, too.

You can wear it as you want to.
Just make sure it's not bothering you in the face or something. You can also think of styles that fits to your music. For example if you have like fast and edgy music you can have a straggling bun. I like "in-baked plaits". It both beautiful and good if you don't want your hair to be loose. http://dorba.webblogg.se/images/fl_ta.jpg <-- There you have one that is plaited in the bangs.. It's much more easier to do it on others than on yourself. So maybe you could ask someone to make it for you? I would fix it for you if i could. Use spray to fix it when you are ready, what ever you have chosen. |

Also make sure not to wear sticky lipgloss of you have a long ponytail. When your ponytail flies around as you move, you hair can get stuck on your lips!
(Not that this has ever happened to me ........ ) |

If you want to put it into a bun, here is a good website that has pretty clear instructions for the "ballet bun"
http://www.schoolofballetarts.com/bun.htm I have very fine hair so I use Got-2-B-Glued on slightly damp hair, brush it back into the ponytail. I cheat and use a "hair scrunchie" under the hairnet because it makes my bun bigger....suffering from bun-envy.... Anyway, if you use pins for securing the twisted hair, I would suggest hairpins instead of bobbypins. To use them you angle down through the ponytail into the scalp hair, then back up to the ponytail hair. I know that it's all wrapped with the hair net but we had girls losing bobby pins at our ice show....nasty!! Before you net it all, shake your head to make sure nothing falls. Net it and secure the net with 4-5 pins. At my next competition, I'm wearing my hair gelled (it's wavy) and swept back instead; with brown snap clips strategically placed to keep it out of my face. No sparkly barrette.
