double salchow and knees???

hey!

for those working on their double salchows, I was just wondering, do you ever get a really sore knee - the knee that you do the 3-turn on (not your landing leg)??

I have been working on it a lot lately, and my knee is really acting up....I recently ran a cross country race and made it much worse...but I can't figure out if the initial injury is from skating or not! I thinj that I might be twisting my knee on the take off but I am not sure, and am not about to try it now that I'm already injured lol

How old are you and exactly where does it hurt? I think you are probably too old for Osgood-Schlatter's, but I'll tell you the primary symptom just in case. Feel the bump just below the knee, at the top of the tibia. If it's swollen and tender, then you may have O-S. You can learn more about it here.

Yes. When my knee acts up its usually from too much salchowing. There is a lot of torque on the knee from the down up down and then having to hold the rotation before leaping.

Tell your coach, and also ask if there is a different entrance to the jump. There is, but you should let your coach know why you are asking. The alternate entrance is RBO3 - check - step down to left inside and launch. It takes the FI 3 turn out of it, and because there's more checking, more control over the jump. Mohawk entrance

If you've been using the rotation of the 3 to turn your salchow, that definitely would have troubled your knee as it's trying to control the rotation and not your core.

Yes, that happens to my takeoff knee when I do too many double sal takeoffs or axel takeoffs. Cut down the number of attempts you allow yourself each day and also make sure you stretch out the outer quadriceps muscles above the knee and to the outside of the leg. It might also help a little to try it from a right back outside 3-turn, then step down onto left back inside edge and take off. There is a little less use of the left knee that way.

Do you know any good stretches for that? lol thanks

I definitely need to cut down on the number of double salchows I do...because lately I've been doing a lot which is why I think I've been so sore...

dbny- im almost 16...I checked the site that you posted and that could definitely be it as well...

You should really go see a pediatric orthopod about it. In it's severest form, the tendon can actually tear the top off the tibia tubercule, requiring surgery. We learned the hard way that this problem requires a specialist. Our family practitioner, who is usually great with everything, completely blew it when it came to treating O-S, even though he diagnosed it.

You need to make sure you jump and then rotate so that you aren't torquing off your knee. My coach makes sure that my jumps go up before they rotate which really reduces the torque on my knee on that double sal, toe, and loop (I was having so serious issues with the loop, especially). If you are only a couple inches off the ice, you are not jumping before rotating. Not good. You'll end up with isues like Tara Lipinski

Here are the two that I do (scroll down and see photos):
http://www.halhigdon.com/15Ktraining/Stretch.htm

The one using the bench is great because once you're in position you can twist your body so that you feel the stretch more in the outside of the quad muscle (outside of your left thigh when the left thigh is on the bench).

And Techskater had a good point, too. Make sure you jump up first, rather than trying to start rotating as you take off.

Yes, it's always a good idea to alternate types of elements. When I was first working on double sals I had a very sore knee!!!

I've never really had a sore knee from doing double sals. I'll call it a blessing from God. My coach only allows me to do an element a certain number of times before moving on. But when I'm practicing by myself, I do a lot more double sals but I don't recall having any soreness. Now sit spins and edge pulls makes my legs sore.
