What I've learned...
What I've learned while doing forced time off ice...
The Good --My checking account is getting very healthy ![]() --I have soooo much time now --I don't have to race to the rink from work --If you eat a lot less, you won't gain weight while not exercising (so far) --Mornings are less hectic when not packing a skating bag The Bad --I'm not getting any exercise ![]() --I'm not learning anything new (and getting frustrated with it) --I even miss all the stretching and boring warm up laps The Ugly --I am losing all the muscle mass in my left calf ![]() --And the flexion and extension in my left ankle --TV is d***ed boring Today is week four. I go see the doctor next week. I really hope he tells me I can start skating at six weeks (his minimum) but I'm not holding my breath. |

I know how tough it is to be on enforce leave from the rink! When I broke my ankle the surgeons told me to stay off for six months. Luckily I worked hard at my physio and healed well, so was back on after three months but those three months were very long and hard.

I broke my ankle, had to have surgery, a metal plate and screws put in (which I still have) and I was back on the ice the same week I came out of plaster 5 weeks after the event and I aint a spring chicken!! Hows about that then. This of course was with the consent of the specialist and started off with 10 minutes at a time and gradually increasing.
Just read this again and realised it sound awfully selfish, sorry NCSkater02, believe me you will be fine, like yourself I found I had money to spend when I got back on the ice, and its pretty obviouse what a skater will spend it on, when you get back on the ice you will probably find a new determination. I must say I had never heard of Jerry Springer until my accident and sad as it sounds I ended up looking forward to watching his shows, that's how bored I got!! so I know how awful it must be for you but take heart I'm sure things will get better, just give it time and do what the doctors and physios tell you to do. The muscle does come back, mine looked funny at first because I had one leg thinner than the other but it took no time to catch up. After my knee surgery the doctor ordered Russian electro-stimulation to help develop my muscles back.
Worked wonders!!!! Wish I had one of those machines at home.

However, I won't be back on the ice before I am released to a full work schedule. I think my director might get upset with me because she made a new schedule and job for me while I heal. And in reality, the job is what lets me enjoy the ice. |

Get well soon, NCSkater! Yes, I remember watching lots of TV with my leg propped up- home shopping networks, CNN, food network, etc. I felt pretty flabby and was so out of shape when I was able to walk again, that I felt out of breath walking around a shopping mall. But sure enough, you will regain your skating abilities! Think you'll be able to compete at the Dogwood competition? It's going to be in mid-August.

I too broke my ankle doing a spin. in fact like an idiot i was spinning in the lutz corner and traveled right into a lutz hole and twisted my ankle so hard it broke right above the boot line. ouch!
the 3 months i could not skate were horrible, but when i came back i came back with lots of determination to do more and better. I had a 2 year plan and i have more than fullfilled everything so far. My ankle became very strong! So there is hope at the end of the tunnel. Stay focused on your future goals! ![]() |
