ROLL CALL - Skate San Francisco 2005

Since there is a roll call for the Halloween Classic, I might as well start one for Skate San Francisco too!!! So who coming here... and what event are you competing in?

I will be in the Adult Pre-Bronze Light Entertainment/Dramatic event again this year. I will not jinx myself by saying this will be my last Pre-Bronze event, b/c God knows if I'm ready to take that Bronze Moves test. But I will say that I have a new artistic program done by a new choreographer (my secondary coach!) I like her stuff so far. I hope my skating will do her work some justice by that time. And if I'm lucky, I may actually stay on the podium this year!!!

Look forward to seeing you guys there!!!

San Fransisco

I'll be there! Bronze-level Freeskating, Interpretive, and Solo Dances at the very least. Possibly some skills and MIF events as well - depending on what events are offered. Are there team events? If so, I'm up for joining a team.

skate SF

I am hoping to do this one but I have heard they have bad times for the adults, is it adult only this year? What about dancers at this event? I really am looking for an excuse to go to the west coast.

Otherwise I'll skate masters nov fs, spins, field moves jr/sr, pre gold dance and whatever else looks fun.

Is this a USFS competition? And is the announcement online somewhere?

Thanks!

I'm hoping to do this competition.

If I can get my tests passed (or if I can skate up a level) I'll be competing adult Gold, if not it'll be Silver

Just FS and/or compulsory (not sure if compulsory is offered).

I'm on the fence about this one. I'd have to compete in Bronze and my skills just aren't competitive enough right now for the category. Plus, the only program I currently have would have to be completely reworked. I don't know if I really want to spend the $$$ on what would likely turn out to be a lot of stress & aggravation.

Edited to add: I just looked at the competition announcement and am no longer on the fence. I promised my young niece I'd head out to Virginia for her birthday, which is the same date as the first day of Skate SF.

I'm planning to attend. I will be skating Adult Gold FS for sure. Don't know about interp yet, I don't think I will have a new program together in time.

Jazzpants, do you have any influence with the organizers? Can you tell them not to schedule the Adult events late Sunday night this year??

It's usually a combination of USFSA and ISI, I don't know about this year as I haven't read the annoucement yet.

If you were refering to bad times for the adults as in times for their events -- yes, I have heard of those rumors of bad times for the adults events. One of them is true... it was from me griping about my 10:00pm event two years ago!!! That was because that year they were trying to cram in 4 days worth of events to 3 days!

However...

They have learned their lesson and they don't try to cram in events late at night now! The reason why it's expanded this to four days is because it's a HUGE event and we need the days spread out so people don't skate at weird times like 10pm or early EARLY morning. My event last year was a Friday at 11am. I loved the timeslot! (Though I didn't praticularly like my skate that day...but that's another story...)

This is a combined adults and kids event... however, there are a lot more adult events at this competition than a lot of the ones I've heard about or seen.

Here's the announcements: http://www.scsf.org/skatesf/SkateSF2005/skatesf2005.htm

Hell, the organizers doesn't have that much influence on time! It really depends on who signed up for the competition and the specific events!

The other thing -- I have a funny feeling this would be my answer: They will try to acomodate that request, but no matter what they do, there's always someone who will not be happy with their time slot for one reason or another. (This is partly why they made the event four days long... probably should make it a week now at this point!!!)

To Jazzpants (or anyone else from SF)

Hi Jazzpants: I am starting to plan for the San Fransisco competition and since this is your neighbourhood I would like to ask you - what 'district' is the competition in. Districts are defined at Priceline as Cathedral Hill area, Civic Centre area Fishermens Wharf area, Union Square east or west area, South San Fransisco area and Airport area. If I were to book with the two economy hotels named in the announcement, would I need to book a car?

I know, I know I am early but I have never liked doing the last-minute thing unless it can't be helped.....

The ice rink is in the SOMA area! I think you want to aim towards SOMA (South of MArket), financial district, or Union Square if you are looking to find a hotel w/o having to rent a car. I will say though that the MUNI system is pretty reasonable so as along as you're in the city of SF, I wouldn't worry too much... there's plenty of MUNI bus lines! (I got by w/o a car for the longest time. It was when I had to get out of the city for a job that I finally got a car...)

Do NOT aim towards the Tenderloin district! WAAAAY too dangerous!!! I would aim towards the Marriott or Ramana Inn for the best deals. I haven't stayed at the Pickwick, but the hotel bldg on the outside looks cheap to me...

singerskates (and all you other Canadians out there in skatingforum.com land...) this event IS sanctioned by Skate Canada!!!

Many thanks. I got an incredible seat sale so the flight is booked. I am glad I don't need a car, now for a hotel room......

The Argent Hotel is also very close to the ice rink -- within walking distance. The Palace hotel is also nearby, but is $$$$.

Based on the Priceline districts you described Raye, I think that the rink would fall within the Union Square East area. Hotels on or near the Embarcadero may work for you as well.

I wish I could go, but I have NO extra money and I don't think anyone from my rink is going anyways. I loved this competition when I went though!

Yeah, I have contemplating going to as a competitor this year, since I have my Bronze tests to do and that takes priority! But my coaches wants me to go do it... so I'm doing it!!!

Skate SF

Unfortunately,
I think not for me. I will go to Philly instead, I prefer all adult competitions rather than the mixed.

Is anyone interested in sharing a room and splitting the cost, at the Argent Hotel (the official host hotel for this event) with me? I am an easy roommate and don't take up the bathroom for too long

Yeah, I can see the case where an all adult competition is preferred (and I *DO* wonder why we don't have any local all-adult competitions considering that we have a HUGE population of adult figure skaters in both the Bay Area and LA...) But I do want to add though that despite the fact that this is a mixed competition that we have historically had a HUGE turnout of adult skaters coming out of the woodworks. I always consider Skate SF as a small preview/glimpse of what you'll see at Sectionals or Nationals. And of course, this year it's also sanctioned by Skate Canada, so hopefully we'll get a good turnout from Canadians as well too.

Which reminds me... Annabel... anybody you know of on your side of the Atlantic that you know are coming here this year? (Not that I expect anyone, but I was just wondering...)

Hmmm, some days, I agree - other days, you were in there longer! I seem to remember just being too tired even to change & go down to it one day, just slept, instead!

Not to my knowledge, unless Jenny is going? Haven't seen her recently to find out. Wish we could go - one of these years, we will! First of all the Peach, then Skate SF, probably 2-3 years apart, given our budgets! But not next year for either, we really want to do the dance camp at Bad Reichenhall again, and we can't do that and go to the USA in the same year! Alas.

No new interpretive at this point. I will most likely only be doing my FS program and it will be last year's. If I do enter interp, it will be Survivor....got a stick I can borrow?? I left my other one in Kansas City!

I've been spending too much time Marathon training and not enough time skating to get anything new together.
