Wilson Coronation Ace vs. MK Professional blades...

dd needs new blades. Coach came off the ice today and commented on how she didn't think dd's skates were working well for her. I mentioned wanting to replace the blades on her skates and she mentioned that she felt that wasn't the only issue. Dd's boots are hand-me-downs from another skater.

Anyway... I took dd to see the fitter/sharpener and have him look at her boots and blades. Well... there seems to be an issue with her blades! The rocker is getting flat(or something like that). So, for those of you who have used or have kids who have used(or use!) either a Coronation Ace or Professional blade, which do you prefer and why? Thanks!

My understanding is that they are very similar. My daughter switched from Coronation Ace to MK Pro one year ago. I'm not sure why we switched--I think it was time for new equipment and her coach was just more familiar with the MK. There didn't seem to be any adjustment period at all. In fact spins and axel were immediately better. However, I attribute that to a switch from worn out Freestyle boots (purchased used and given 9 more months of hard use) to new Sp-Teris (Super Teri). She said the boot felt much more supportive and helped on the jumps. And the fact that the MK Pro was new probably also helped.

She did very well on both blades. She just switched today to Pattern 99s and says that the blades definitely feel much different this time--good, but different.

There have been a lot of discussions in this forum recently about the differences between these two blades - you might want to do a little search. I was always under the impression that they were very similar but over the years I have noticed that maybe there are some differences and according to some people in the "boot and blade-fitting business" there are differences between individual pairs of blades within any given type (ie., not all Coronation Aces are exactly alike).

Most blades will get a flatter rocker as they are sharpened (gets flatter with each sharpening) and so this is probably what your daughter's coach is referring to when she says they are not right. This is pretty normal, although we have some boot-and-blade people in our area who claim to be able to replace the rocker. I am not sure how this is possible but I am sure that some of the engineers on this forum can weigh in.

Thanks so much. I appreciate the replies. I really think we are going to go with the Professional blades. I had the fitter re-measure my daughter's foot. I know when we bought her skates last year(Jackson Freestyle boots) he said she would do better with a narrow boot. Anyway... I couldn't order the Freestyle boots in a narrow, so she wore the regular width boots. When coach mentioned the potential problem with dd's skates, I had her re-measured. We are changing her boots since the rink has a pair of boots in stock and is giving me a good deal on them. Amazing thing(for us!) is that for the first time, dd was able to tie the boots on her feet tighter then she has ever been able to get on her own! Dd tried on 2 different boots yesterday. One in a regular width and the other in the narrow width. It really was amazing to see the difference! What surprises me is, I never thought of her foot as being narrow(except for when she was very little). She seems to fit in regular shoes just fine. Anyway.... she said they felt good on her feet(yay!!!). Hopefully the change will help her out...that is once she has broken in her new skates. We'll start the process once the blades come in.

I really could kick myself for not looking into narrow boots when we changed skates a few months back. The thing is, we were given her current skates and given our personal struggles this year, it was a gift to get them! The fitter says her current boots(Jackson Competitor) are good, they just aren't a good fit for her. I am able to find a way to pay for these new skates, so we are going for it!
The draw back is that she will not be testing next month. We'll have to wait for the blades to come in and then she will be breaking in new boots and adjusting to new blades. NOT a good time to test. She'll be good to skate in the comp in September and will likely test in September instead.

I have thought about opening up a savings account just for skating expenses. I'm going to have to put a little aside for when we have to buy new skates next year. I cannot let this happen again. Poor kid!

that sounds like a sensible idea. If only there was enough $$ at the end of the pay period to actually save some!

That is the other issue! I'm going to try something different to try and help with skating costs. We've had to be "creative" this year in order to keep her skating. In fact, one of the other coaches said some very nice things about my daughter and then commented on ice time and how much it helps to advance a skater. Yup... agreed but money also helps to pay for ice time. Currently, dd tends to skate about 4 days a week for a total of 6-8 hours a week. Earlier this year, we had to cut back on ice time and lessons. That slowed dd's progress a bit, but I can't help that. You do what you need to do and unfortunately, skating will take the hit if we need to cut some stuff out. *sigh* I don't know how those of you with more then one skater do it!

Yes... and I have her outgrown skates for sale as well. I just haven't had any "bites" yet. I'm trying to sell her Jackson Freestyle skates for 45.00 and still have no bites. I thought that was a great deal but I suppose the right person has not come around just yet. I need to renew the listing I have up at the rink since I put it up at the end of April. Eventually they will sell!
