UK to International Competition question

Hello,

For a UK adult skater considering competing abroad for the first time, I'm wondering how insurance works. I have a normal travel insurance policy and NISA membership (which includes some kind of accident policy). Do I need anything else or does NISA's policy cover what travel insurance doesn't (i.e. competition)?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

NISA's policy doesn't cover you for competing abroad, I believe, so you might want to take out a winter sports policy for that.

One thing you need to do is inform NISA whenever you plan to take part in a competition abroad - this is because of a kerfuffle with elite skaters getting the "right" IJS scores abroad, and is only a formality for the likes of us. Just email julia.mcmurray@iceskating.org.uk. She won't acknowledge your e-mail unless it's a competition she doesn't already have the bumph for, in which case she'll ask for it.

Will we meet at Dunkerque?

General winter sports policies don't cover you for competing (though they should be OK for training camps and suchlike). For competitions you need a specialist sports policy. I get mine from the NISA insurers, Perkins Slade.

I'll contact the company you suggest Fiona - many thanks! (Obviously I did ask my travel insurance company but as soon as you use the word "competition" all bets are off!)
Yes - you guessed it Mrs Redboots, thought I'd give Dunkerque a go (all my coaches idea honest). I'll drop an email to NISA.

Thanks again
