First program for 8 yr old boy?

My DS wants to start competing in local competitions this year and will be working with his coach to put together a program for an ISI competition - ISI Freestyle level 3, I believe - we are supposed to be looking for music at this point and his coach has given us a few suggestions but I would love to hear any ideas that anyone may have for program music for this age/skill level? He has lots of energy and his strengths are definitely his jumps . . . if that helps any. And of course, with ISI the music can have vocals . . .

Also, what do boys WEAR in competition? He is one of very few boys at our rink who participates in figure skating, obviously . . . so I am fairly clueless. Any help/input would be greatly appreciated!

Does he have a favorite movie or TV show? Sometimes those theme songs or soundtracks work quite well, and it's always best if he can skate to something he genuinely likes.

I've used cool versions of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and "Boy from New York City" for boy students' programs. My current student recorded his OWN music, which I haven't heard as yet. Should be interesting.

I echo the "something he likes" suggestion. He'll have more fun with it and be able to contribute to the program rather than just learning it from the coach.

I know a lot of boys (not skaters, though) like the music from Disney's "High School Musical" movie.

Lower-level boys don't really overdress. Pants and a nice shirt are fine, just make sure the pants won't get caught by a blade. See THIS THREAD for some tips.

A baseball uniform, a pair of black STRETCH jeans (straight leg) are some reuseable clothing choices.

Whatever you do, don't let him skate to "Greased Lightning" (from Grease) as an artistic program. I can't tell you how many little boys skate to this, and I sit there as a judge thinking, "Didn't anyone listen to the lyrics? This song is dirty!"

LOL!!!

The new movie Eragon has music that I suspect will soon be overused, but nobody's using it yet, as far as I know! I downloaded it from here and cut a 2-minute version for my coach, who said it was rather definitely boys' music.

Husband skates to Bohemian Rhapsody - I found we had a karaoke version of it with no lyrics, and cut 90 seconds of it for him. So he skates in generic skating trousers and a Queen T-shirt!

I will have to check out the Eragon music for sure . . . we haven't seen the movie yet, but I was wondering about the soundtrack and whether it might have promise!

There's some good "boy" music on the soundtrack of the Johnny Depp "Willy Wonka" movie.

Will your son also skate USFS? We really need the boys there, and I am always amazed when I see boys who compete ISI and never compete USFS, considering that boys can do really well with the showmanship skills they learn in ISI. Not trying to say one system is better than another, but it would be great if he could do both!

As far as music goes, the theme from Charlie Brown is good, or PeeWee's Big Adventure (or whatever it is called). They are both playful and are good character programs! In costumes, pants and a shirt are fine, and it's good if it somewhat matches the character of the music.

It depends on what he likes and his interests. These were the things that sprung to mind straight away:

James Bond theme songs
Music from the tv show "the Simpsons"
I am the music man (I think its from a musical but I can't remember which)
Circle of Life (from Lion King) though it might be too slow for your skater.
I just can't wait to be King (Lion King)
One Jump Ahead (from Aladdin)
You got a Friend in Me (from Toy Story) once again though might be too slow.
Give a little whistle (I think it's from Jiminey Cricket?)

but they all might be a little bit too "artistic" for what you are wanting...?

Completely agree! There's also a symphonic CD of Queen out there that I've heard people cut for both the Silver level and Adult Synchro a couple years ago which I really liked!

Back on the subject here! Music for an 8 year old boy. I know people are gonna groan, but Pirates of the Carribean has some less used pieces to it.

::ducks::

Probably . . . our rink actually JUST switched (in the past year) from ISI to USFS (for the learn-to-skate program), still hosts competitions for both though. ISI just happened to be the first competition coming up that he could realistically be ready for.

Some GREAT suggestions all around for music . . . thanks so much and feel free to keep them coming!

Program for 8 year old boy

I don't know much about skating in other countries than Sweden.
But I do know that the clothes should be in a stretch-fabric so you easily can move around in all angles.
Boys usually have a pair of trousers and a matching shirt.
If you have time you can try to make the clothes match the music.

The important thing with the music is that it should have a good and even tempo. It should also be something that the boy likes, maybe from a movie..

Here in Sweden we have a rather good piano player. His music is used all over the country. Mostly for younger kids.

I also know boys who have used star wars-music, the theme from Indiana Jones and music from the Harry Potter movies.

I've always thought some of the Beach Boys' stuff would be a cute program for a boy. Might work better for Artistic but I think it could work for a regular program too. He could wear a Hawaiian shirt and regular skating pants.
