Yeah, and notice that the topic "FULL" has vanished off the board.
There's a lot to be said for "empty". LOL |

"The optimist, who always was a fool,
Cries 'Look, my cup of ale is still half-full!' His brother gives the facts their proper twist: 'My cup's half-empty,' sighs the pessimist."

"there is no such thing as absolutely empty space. All space contains fluctuating fields and particles. Even in the emptiest space that the laws of nature permit, there are energy levels about which the energies of the fields and particles fluctuate; and these energy levels are never sharply defined." Essentially, as space is created it is given some properties of 'non-emptiness'. "

EMPTY SPACE
Ideas about the nature of the ingredients that make up our universe have changed radically and frequently through the course of the history of science. But no single idea has evolved quite so much as the notion of empty space, or "nothing." To Lucretius, empty space was an essential ingredient of the universe; to Aristotle, the very concept of the void was an abomination. Newton gave space shape and form as a static and permanent "stage" on which everything took place. Leibnez argued that space was merely a set of relationships, no more real than a family tree was a real tree. Newton prevailed — at least temporarily. But his emptiness was filled with an essence known as the "luminiferous ether," which had bizarre properties. Einstein banished the ether, but showed that space was elastic, and relative, and inseparable from time. Quantum mechanics filled the void with energy and fluctuating fields, producing anti-matter ("holes in nothing") in the process. Einstein then warped space, turning gravity into geometry, producing black holes and other strange objects made entirely of space-time. More recently, Alan Guth showed the entire universe could be created from the energy of nothing-"the ultimate free lunch," as he called it. String theorists have added extra dimensions to empty space. And now, cosmologists believe that the energy of the vacuum is producing a "repulsive force" that is causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate. These theories suggest that the nature of the vacuum has changed over the course of the evolution of the universe -- and may well change again, perhaps destroying everything. |

So, are we half empty or half full?

My faux pairs partner would say we're half full. I, of course, would say we're half empty!

Well, judging by the number of posts on both these topics, it seems to be less than half full, since "full" has only 8 posts as of now, while "empty" has 34. However, if you're going by the number of views, it's less than half empty, because "full" has more than half the number of views that "empty" does. Have I got everyone nice and confused now?

.....School is out for spring break here. Perhaps many were lucky enough to go on vacation this week.
If my head wasn't so empty, I'd start a new thread.....or maybe it's just full of useless thoughts? ![]() ![]() Last edited by Elsy2; 04-04-2003 at 01:50 PM. |
