dc area skaters/coaches
After taking a well deserved break, I am back on the ice. Unfortunately, my coach is going on maternity leave next week. Does any know of a coach in the MD/DC/VA area who works very well with lower level adult skaters? I am the only adult in my rink who skates above the gamma level so I can't get advise from there.
Thanks |

I met Sherry Dorsey Cook here in Sun Valley -- each year when she comes on vacation she also teachs for a few weeks. She is from Washingtong DC and is a wonderful, kind lady. I think she has 30+ years coaching experience and loves the sport, and loves adults and children alike that want to particpate.

Libby Wilkinson at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Maryland. She was my coach before I moved to Chicago, and she worked with many top kids in addition to adults. She's got a fantastic temperament, and is very encouraging.

I second Libby Wilkinson. She is a wonderful coach; supportive, encouraging, plus she won't let adults settle for less just because they are older. She pushes me just as much as her kid students. PM me if you would like her contact information or info about the rink.

Gary Shortland out at Skatequest Reston also has a lot of adult skaters. He's normally a dance/MIF coach though.
Also Barbara Walker who coaches at Skatequest Reston (and maybe at Mt. Vernon) plus on Washington FSC club sessions is a fab technician who has both adults and kids. She coaches basics, MIF, Freestyle and Dance.

There's also Nick Perna at Fairfax Ice Arena. He's a great technician for stroking and MIF as well as jumps and spins. But he doesn't do choreography, or go to competitions, etc. And he's equally happy teaching crossovers to a beginner or working on quads with a senior man.

Nick's a great coach. There are also exceptional coaches at the Gardens in Laurel.

Mt. Vernon also has Sergey Korovin. He has taken me through Bronze moves so far. He has a few adult skaters and I think is the best coach I have ever had! (oh yeah, he is the only coach I have ever had!)
He works me very hard but is also fun too! You can somtimes catch him in the power stroking class on fridays at 5:30pm. (I am not sure if they are running that class right now during summer schedule...you would have to check.) ![]()

Hi Scarlett,
My name's Tim David. I recently moved from VA to NYC. I also would recomend Sergey Korovin of Mt. Vernon Ice Rink. He does not coddle skaters. Sergey does compliment their current abilities, but works on making his skaters realize their potential. His current elite student is Craig Ratterree. Craig won the silver medal at the Junior level at the 2005 US National Championships. Sergey is excellent with his techniques and I am very happy that I had the chance to train with him. Happy Skating

I would concur that Nick Perna is a great coach. He fixed my flying camel this morning, which was completely off last night. It was really good today, once he told me to switch one thing. He also provided fixed my backward perimeter power stroking w/back inside and forward inside 3-turns (clockwise) as well as some counter advice. He even used my lingo...the "counter thingy".
