Does Sheffield Ice Arena have a shop? If so, that would probably be your best bet.

There is a shop in the iceSheffield complex (next door to Hallam Arena, if you don't know where it is). I don't know whether it sells figure skates, or only caters for hockey players, but if it doesn't, it will know where you should go.

It is fairly quick by train from Sheffield to Nottingham, and they have a good shop at Nottingham Ice Arena. (About 15 minutes walk from Nottingham train station).

Ring the shop first to get opening times.

Hi, There is a shop in iceSheffield but they do not always have a great stock of boots. However, if you email Ian Robertson, his website is iceskate.co.uk, he visits Sheffield once every 4/5 weeks to grind blades and he may be able to help you.

Hi

If your up for a little drive over the Penines there is a very very good private dealer in Blackburn. You can find him on the web for Specialist Skating Services. You can deal with him in person or online via their online sales

Isn't there (wasn't there?) somewhere on the opposite side of the dual carriageway who does skates? The 'in house' skate shop is pretty rubbish from what I saw last time I was there.

What's Ian like for sharpening skates? I used to use Terry Rolfe and am very nervous at letting anyone else near them! Maybe I should just make a trip to Slough

Nix - are you taking lessons at the arena? Why not ask one of the pros?

The shop that was on the other side of the road closed down. Ian Robertson is the guy from Blackburn. I haven't heard any complaints about his grinding. He does my daughters figure & dance blades and she seems happy but I have to admit that she is not super critical - a bit laid back at times. He is also the official grinder for Dancing on Ice.

Great title: "Official Grinder for Dancing on Ice."

There's a little old italian man who goes around my neighborhood in a converted ice cream truck. He sharpens knives and scissors for a fee, right in the truck. We all refer to him as "The Grinder Man." We know it's Spring when the Grinder Man comes around ringing his bells. (The kids are disappointed that it's not the Good Humor Ice Cream man, though.) We're actually relieved to see him, knowing he's still alive and healthy at his age.

ETA: I would NEVER ask him to sharpen my skates, don't worry.

Going off topic a bit, the guy that fits my boots fitted all the boots and blades for Dancing on Ice last time. He said never again. The TV company were very difficult and he did a lot of work for nothing. Good luck to the guy who has taken on this task this time around!

Tashakat - I'm with Andrea, would completely recomend Ian if you are looking for a sharpener, I had my blades done by someone else twice in the last year and I can really tell the difference, they just don't 'go' as nicely!! On those occasions I couldn't wait to get them done by Ian again

And yes he did all the work for Dancing on Ice last time and is doing it again this time.
