The company I work at just started filtering skatingforums.com What's up with that??? I don't log in from home that often so I won't get my skating fix as much as I used to. By any chance is there another way in (ie another web address)?

WTF!?!?! I wonder if there's some way of removing skatingforums from the blocked list... do you have any sys admins that you're friendly with that can help you out???

I guess I should count my blessing that my job to this day hasn't officially "blocked me" from skatingforums. Of course, they found that just keeping me busy with impossible projects and impossible deadlines will usually keep me from reading the boards anyway...

It depends how your company is blocking sites - whether by site name or by IP address.

I just tried signing on directly to the IP address (207.44.236.134) instead of the DNS name, and got in OK, for example ...

Unfortunetely it's blocked at the corperate level. I'd have to fill out all kinds of paperwork giving reasons why it should be unblocked. Hmmm, how about it's nescessary for national defense against hostile lutzes?

I don't think it matters whether you put in the IP address directly or not, but I can try it.

If it were me I'd say it's my way of relaxing during my lunch hour, sort of like reading the daily newspaper.

Or you could buy or borrow a laptop and bring that into work.

I work for the Air Force (as a civilian) and they've block this site (although the other skating site is NOT blocked). They will not unblock it. Really, we are not supposed to be "surfing" other sites that aren't related to work.

I'd rather not make a fuss-if they yank my priveledges, I can't get 99% of my work done and can get into all sorts of trouble.

It's dumb, I agree.

Can you go to a library at lunch? If not, just wait until you get home and catch up then. Just hit the "New Posts" at the top and that will speed things up.

In a previous job, amongst a vast tally of sites of random interest, the company banned ALL the private email sites: which meant I couldn't even access my prime email from my very respected ISP. And as telephone calls were also recorded, you could only take calls on your mobile. And because the office was very tightly packed, you had to leave the office to take a mobile call.

Certain colleagues would spend hours of office time, plotting roundabout ways to check the rugby scores (because the BBC Sports site was blocked).

I was squandering most of my lunch hour, three times a week, going hungry, sitting in the local library waiting for their very slow, lumbering and over-stretched servers to stir into life - just in order (for example) to set up a dental checkup. I really think the company had a moral duty to sponsor the library service, as I used to see many of my colleagues in there too, and often the computers were booked out.

It became all but impossible to run my life!

At work we can't check email from work, or it will get tracked and we have to click an "agreement" acknowledging that. I never abuse the system, but sometimes i need to check something quickly at work (i work at our Library), so i have to use patron computer. Good luck with that, since the patron computers are usually being used!

I can, however, check websites on occasion....

Dooobedooo's idea of using the IP address is probably better than this, but have you tried typing in the site address without the "www"? That's what I did at a previous job when they started blocking this site, and I was able to get in. As I understand it, sites were blocked if they contained objectionable material (ex: porn sites....but even lingerie co sites fell under this heading, apparently - gee, all I want to do is shop for a new bra during my lunch hour, is that obscene? LOL). The message that appeared when I would try to access this site said that it was blocked b/c it contained "inappropriate subject matter". Whatever.

Also, sites involving career searching (I think they were ID'ed by the page titles) were also blocked (given the constant turmoil and layoffs that were going on at this co, that was pretty ironic), which caused problems a couple of times while I was doing my monthly competitor news/research reports, and a couple of the co news links I tried to click on would occasionally be, for some reason, filtered under the no-career search rule - but then other times, they wouldn't - it was weird.

But I had no problem checking personal e-mail from my IP's webmail site. I did, however, have a problem doing that at the co where I interned during the summer between my first and second years of b-school. I also couldn't check my school e-mail account. I was told that those types of sites were blocked to prevent people from downloading personal stuff that might be infected with viruses - apparently, they'd had issues with that in the past. But I had no problem getting into this site there.

Go to http://ninjaproxy.com/ and then scroll to the bottom and it will say "http://" then type your web address in there. Thats what I do when I'm at school because they block the game sites

What really ticks me off is that I can't use the Verizon Wireless Chaperone Website at work....to check up on my kids and double-check that they REALLY ARE WHERE THEY SAY THEY ARE....you know, kids being kids and all. It's blocked and they say I have to reason to need it stupid IT people obviously are NOT parents!!! No, I can't get it on my cell phone, that's another issue I'm having with Verizon.....urrgh!!!

I hate being told what I can and cannot do....

If you have Outlook you can set up "rules" to have mail forwarded. I used to do that but now they have non- ".mil" emails blocked.....but for you others, it might work.

It's possible that the system admin from work has detected that somebody is connecting to skatingforums, and the system admin is trying to prevent people from using the net for things not related to work. This is just a guess only. If there's no work regulations for that thing, then not sure what happened there. But if there's work regulations, and somebody tries to bypass the filtering, and gets found out, then that could be problematic too.

Any luck? (Only outside working hours, of course ... )

I've been thinking about it and the previous poster is correct. I don't want to get caught intentionally going around a filter. It could cause trouble for me. I'll have to settle for late nights
