I had a pair like that! I think the brand was Hyde or Hide? After I found out about Riedell and pro shops, I started calling my better skates "Jekylls."

The old ones have a wooden platform that straps onto your shoe. The leather straps are often missing from those. The newer ones are all metal and even adjust with a skate key like the old metal clamp-on roller skates do.
Once in a while you'll see an absolutely gorgeous pair with turned up toes and maybe even an acorn on the tips. Those go for $$$, so unless I run into a pair at a yard sale, I won't ever get them. I use three searches to look for them on ebay: antique skates, vintage skates, old skates. I don't use the word "ice" in my searches because I've seen some pretty interesting old roller skates too, and I like to look. Enjoy!

DBNY - the mother of one of my students has a table in Red Bank,NJ. Apparently, it's a three-building antique/collectibles market. She's watching for my Lefton Mermaids, should any turn up. Want me to put in a request for these skates?

Thanks, but these go for around $300 and she is probably savvy. I don't think I would pay over $90 for them, and maybe not even that. I just don't have the discretionary income right now.
