We were pleasantly surprised by the 1st medal. She fell in her Freeskate program and so we thought she'd definately place lower. There were 5 girls in her group and I figured she'd place somewhere in the bottom but we were very surprised to see the end result! This was her first fall during a competition but she handled it beautifully. She got right up and with a big smile, she finished her program! She said she was about to cry but then remembered what her coach told her and she finished her program strong.

The second one was pretty good too and this time she didn't fall... lol. Se went out and had a blast! It was her first showcase event. We'e quite poud of her. We always tell her to skate her best, have fun and smile. She knows we only expect her best and that we are proud of her no matter what her placement is, but of coarse, placing 1st is always a bonus!

Well done DD! Sounds like she had a very good day! Just remembering your earlier thread about breaking in skates - did she wear the new ones?

Thank you! Yes, she did. I've watched the video a few times and she did a great job, fall and all. She messed up some choreography and her 1/2 flips have been better, but over all, she did pretty well. It's kind of funny she messed up on some choreography because she's never done that before! Appearantly the judges didn't notice! I'm still a tad surprised(pleasantly!) by her placement, but it just goes to show that even when you think you skated your best you can place low and when you think you've skated badly, you can place higher then you thought. Go figure(no pun intended!)!

Edited to add: in her showcase program, her 1/2 flips were pretty! *shrug*

Sounds like she handled everything well. The judges probably didn't even notice that she "messed up" some of her choreography if she was able to roll with it and keep skating, so that's all that matters.

YAY!!! It's so nice to see your children enjoying what they are doing...and succeed at it!!

Thank you! I think falls are inevitable! She handled it pretty well. Her coach did say once she came off the ice, she cried a bit but then was fine. By the time I saw her, she was perfectly fine. She was still a bit upset about the fall, but otherwise OK.

Her spirals...yup those are currently her "wow" move. She has nice extension(so I have been told) and a lot of felxibility. Her catch spirals are very pretty at times too. Her coach thinks she will eventually have a pretty Biellman too. We'll see!!

Re falling - My daughter's nickname from her coaches is "Bambi" as they never ever know when she is going to fall. It hardly happens doing stuff where you think a child might fall - but - her last competition she has a brief stop at the start of a step sequence and went sliding..... she has done an occasional jump into a barrier etc.

By the way my daughter sometimes deliberately changes bit of her program depending on her mood at competitions.... Although now that she has that reputation coaches are clamping down on it!

Cazzie, that is funny about your daughter's nickname. Dd is pretty good about sticking to her program but on Friday she mixed her arms up some. Odd... but I guess it didn't matter after all.

My dds first fall coincided with her first axel in competition...and she got right up, moved on and landed the second one just fine. Took first place in that.

Her funniest fall was at the end of a program...she was supposed to do an axel, check out, put her toe down and pose, but she fell. With no time to get up and "pose" Dd just stayed butt-to-ice and threw her arms in the air in her ending pose, and that's what it was! Many laughed and cheered, she got up and skated off, really unhurt, and ended up in second place. It was a really funny thing!

That IS funny! I am sure once dd has an axel and it is in a program, we will see more falls. It certainlydoesn't seem uncommon for the kids who are just landing them, to get nervous about landing them in competition! My daughter's friend landed 2 in her 5 minute warm up Saturday, then blew it in her program! She actually landed it in her freeskate but then either didn't check out or fell out of it. She ended up on the ground at any rate. Kinda funny how she landed 2 in a row during the 5 minute warm up then doesn't in her actual program! Go figure... lol.

At daughters rink coaches take turns to take kids to competitions - and if dd thinks the coach doesn't know her program she changes it. If its a coach who knows her program she sticks to it.

Most recent competition the coach (not hers) told her - we realise you've been changing your program and so I've spoken to your coach and will know if you've changed anything. She was dismayed but I feel a bit more secure knowing she isn't going to do anything too unusual... Generally its spins and spirals that she changes and some of the arms.

Hope the idea never occurs to your daughter. I think it can become a game.

Hee hee. Glad they are on to her now! I think my dd would be too afraid to deviate from her planned program. Not so much what her coach might say, but more so out of concern for how her program would turn out if she DID change it. The only thing she has ever done was to add a lunge at the end when she was running ahead of her music and she probably wouldn't have done that if her coach hadn't told her to do it.

Does your dd do improv?? Sounds like she'd be good at it. My daughter doesn't like it...lol.
