So has anyone taken them up on the "lyrics allowed" new rule?

I Have! I'm going to finally (!) go get my Bronze FS test, and I'm using vocal music for it. It's not typical though--it's African sort of chanting, not in English. And I don't plan to compete with it.

Is anyone else using vocals for the first time?

I plan on redoing my freeskate once I test my first 2 dances. I'll use vocal music instead.

I was never happy with the cut I had.

Why did they implement the "no vocals" rule, anyway? Was it just to make sure offensive lyrics weren't used, or did they feel it'd be too distracting, or...?

Allowed for all USFSA tests and for competition events judged under 6.0.

Edited: Not allowed for IJS events above Intermediate.

I talked with my coach yesterday and we are going to redo my Bronze free program as soon as I get around to cutting music. Will definetly use vocals.

Not allowed for IJS events.
I believe they're also allowed for Juvenile and Intermediate even when IJS is used.

The closest anyone at my rink has come to lyrics is one of the Intermediate boys. He's skating to West Side Story and kept a couple of spoken words in the cut ("beat it" and something else).

No vocals has been a rule for ages. It may be due to the classical/artisitc nature of skating (think ballet). Music choices used to be MUCH more conservative than they are now, mostly classical. Some of it may have been driven by ISU rules--even though they only regulate levels recognized internationally, there may have been a trickle-down effect to lower levels for consistency.

I know ISU rules have been the reason why the junior and senior divisions have gone back and forth in synchro, all teams at those levels had to comply whether or not they competed internationally back when lyrics were not allowed from 94ish-03ish.
I remember having to re-learn an entire new senior free program in about 2 weeks back in the '94-95 season because we had a new coach who didn't think the no lyrics rule applied to teams not competing internationally. She realized it 2 weeks before our first competition (even though I and other skaters had asked her about it at the start of the season because we read the rules right out of the rulebook).

Our Silver Pairs program music was just cut for this coming year. And, it has vocals. Not much, but some. We are using a mix of three different pieces by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. The first piece has them saying "Go Daddy-O" several times.

Since Silver Pairs is judged under 6.0, we are allowed. However, we are also considering competing at the Mountain Cup this year. We can only hope that the announcement that comes out will allow vocals, or we'll have to do something else, or take the hit for vocal music on the points. I think it is only .1, but not sure.

Wouldn't a deduction be 1.0, not 0.1?

holy moly that would be a stiff penalty if it were 1.0!

(No idea what it is though- google seems to think 0.2, but that might just be special olympics)

As doubletoe said, it's a 1.00 deduction for a music violation in IJS.

Ah- in IJS it makes a lot more sense. 1.0 out of 6.0 is A LOT.
(Then again, it seems that the IJS penalty is much harsher for low level skaters than high ones... but I guess when you are high level, every point counts)
