What do you think about during a Spiral

"What is she yelling at me for? My leg IS up!"

"My back is killing me"

Is the path clear?
Ok, balance, tighten tummy, go!
head up, leg higher, where are my arms?
is anyone coming across my path?
argh!, can't you tell I can't steer?
leg down, regain control. Start over.

"The spiral feels high... (then looks at her reflection on the Plexi-Glass...) oh, it's only hip level. "

"Geez, it's PAINFUL turning out my foot"

"WHAT!?!?! My knees aren't locked!?!?!"

(Regarding skaters in my path....) "Oh, I hope that skater gets out of my path... oh, thank you for moving!!!"

"I better be careful! I might go and split a chin or something..."

LIFT TOES!!! (Thinking of doubletoe's suggestion...)

(Re: Catch foot spirals...) My body feels crooked...

Needless to say, I HATE spirals!!!

"Straighten the knees! Point the toes! Am I actually on an edge? Don't forget the knees!"

"What the heck am I doing with my arms?"

"Push the leg back!" (for left spirals, because my leg tends to wander out to the side)

And lastly, "Straighten the knees!"

For back spirals, it's usually "Don't go up on the toepick...don't go up on the toepick...don't go up on the toepick."

I've done enough face-plants practicing spirals for Silver moves that my first thought is:

GET THE WEIGHT BACK!

STAY OFF THE TOES!

Then come the usual thoughts about straight knees and leg elevation.

Heavens, those toe-pick snags during a spiral hurt!

Locking my knee
Pointing my toe
Making the big toe of my free leg point to the ceiling
Extension
Arched back
Separating my free leg from my skating hip
Beautiful arm positions

And of course...the points of tension in a spiral shown in my diagram I created:

I don't do it in the spiral, but it's nice to know someone else grips with their toes. I do it in my spins, which probably explains a lot.

This is me trying to do the change-edge spiral (and since I start on LFI, I would be going the "wrong" way to public)

Make sure to get the *inside* edge...
(keep the R leg up!)
I think I have some space on the right of that guy...
(keep the R leg up!)
and I should pass before that lady gets here...
(keep the R leg up!)
now, change edge... am I on the outside edge yet?
ok, that should be enough, grab blade
is it high enough? no? higher, higher...
but... why am I going so slow now? i'm almost stoped...
but its not 3 sec yet let's wait just a little more...
