Promise them a manicure with a friend!

That is apparently the key- lol. My girl is competing preliminary for the first time next week. She has a hard program with a death drop, an axel, an axel combination and two different doubles (sal and toe). Yesterday, her coach suggested maybe changing the toe to a single flip loop combination as she was having trouble landing the 2 doubles within the program. She really really wanted to try so coach said ok, we can always change right before the competition next week.

So today, she did her run through with ALL the jumps- they have been working it in pieces. I told her if she landed all the jumps, she could celebrate by having a friend over and I will do a manicure for them.

And there they were- LOL!

Good for her! Good luck at the competition!

Thanks, I really think she was able to do it all along and it was more in her head than her body. Then, once it was HER idea to do it (and her coach gave her an option on the second double), it changed her perspective, like maybe she relaxed a bit. Either way, she is very pleased.

Keep in mind that just because she had one clean run through in practice there is no guarantee that this will translate to a clean program in competition. As a matter of fact the odds are against it. Competition is a very different beast from practice and it is rare for a skater who hasn't done clean run throughs consistently in practice to execute when the pressure is on. I have seen more disappointed parents in this type of situation than I care to count. That being said good luck.

Oh I know, BTDT with the axel. She missed one and hit one in the first competition- by the 3rd time, they were there! I am just glad SHE is feeling good about it.

I actually admired her attitude of wanting to try. She said to her coach "I don't care how I place, I really want to try it".
