Perhaps we should volunteer to sit on his knee!
But, seriously, you can take a few moments to get to your starting position, and many skaters do skate out and hold a final pose as they arrive at their position, before getting into the pose they want to hold while their music starts. And for dancers, of course, you have eight bars of the music you may use for your own steps to get you into the dance, before you start the compulsory steps. And in some competitions you can do finishing steps, too, although in this country they usually turn the music off as soon as you've done the last edge of the last pattern, so you look a right wally doing them to no music! Actually, my pet hate is an over-elaborate start to a very basic dance, but a good starting pose and a couple of slightly different steps do personalise it very slightly.

Wow, really? Interesting. I agree with Thin-Ice that we as judges usually have our heads down by that point, but I was taught that you always bow/curtsy to the judges first -- out of respect.

I'm usually so dazed that I bow to whichever side winds up to be closer first.
