As I was walking out of the Pro shop with my daughters new skates I had a skater say to me, "$500 for a pair of skates, that's not bad!", so I asked her how long she uses a pair of boots - well over a year. My daughter is 7 and needs a new pair of boots every 6 months, and we have YET to be able to keep the same size blade!

£660 GBP for the boots and about £260 GBP for the blades!

Grinding costs between about £5-£10 and then of course there's the tights, the outfits, the lessons ........

For PattyP

I once had a car drown in the parking lot of my office building, along with the christmas presents I had stashed away in the trunk. My HOMEOWNER'S INSURANCE covered the losses since I had receipts.

The only problem is that they may deduct for depreciation, unless you have replacement-value insurance. In any case, it doesn't hurt to ask.

Okay, we just upped the price of my daughters skates - according to the Podiatrist that she saw... she needs orthotics! Anyone here in the US have experience with having insurance pay for these?

Unfortunately, they wouldn't pay for mine Wouldn't pay for my dad's either, I don't think, and he doesn't even skate, just needs 'em to walk around. Sorry I don't have better news for you.

Our insurance did pay for daughter's orthotics in her shoes, and perhaps would have for skates, but I didn't pursue it.

We opted for Harlick to do a foot mold and make the orthotics. It just seemed easier at the time, and we needed boots quickly.

Although these orthotics worked fine for us, I know some posters did not like their Harlick orthotics. Well, they come right out if they don't work out for you. It seems to me that the orthotics are basically just adding arch support in our case.

Mine are Riedell 320's. We paid about $270 for them, around there. First sharpening was free, the 2nd sharpening cost about $8. I got these skates a year and two months ago. Could they last another year or year and a half? Here's hoping!
Unfortunately I wasn't properly fit, and I have very minor foot slippage, but not extreme.

Btw, my mom thought my skates were REALLY expensive. If only she could see what some cost!! It'd make mine look cheap.

I find that my feet change shape with temperature/weight/the moon so although the orthotics were seriously comfortable on a 'good' day on a 'bad' day they were agony. I've opted to go without on this lot of customs and haven't noticed too much of a problem (I pronate), now if only I could find someone who can put blades on PROPERLY!!!
