Patty -- did you skate at the current rink at the top of Squaw Valley -- or did you get a chance to skate at the old Olympic rink at the base of the ski resort? The bottom one is where the 1960 Olympics were held.. but the roof collapsed onto the ice during a VERY bad (9-day) storm in about 1982 or 1983 and the resort decided not that many people cared about the rink and tore it down! (actually I need a CRYING smilie for that).

The one at the top is VERY cool.. and my coach says she can still do a double salchow when she skates WITH the wind but not when she has to do it into the wind.

So says the veteran of battling altitude sickness every time I go to altitude. Really slows down learning to ski when you spend half the trip sick. I even had very mild symptoms at Lake Placid, and it's what 2000 feet??
Have you done the Mountain Cup or Oberstdorf? They are both at around 1,000 metres (I suppose that's what, 3,300 feet or thereabouts?). I tend to feel it slightly on the first day, but after that I'm fine.

Highest place I've ever skated is Boulder, Colorado, and although I got rather breathless, I'd already spent one night there by then and was fine. The friend who travelled with me, who lives at a much higher altitude than I do (although nowhere in this country is really high!) didn't even notice it.

In Boulder, there's only 1 rink normally, so you skated at uni of colorado rec center right? Unless it's during the winter time, when they open up a tiny (but fun) outdoor rink around Walnut street.

You know those really old skating photographs in the hallways at Lake Placid? Well, they always remind me of "The Shinning!"

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!

They filmed the exterior of Timberline Lodge on Mt Hood (about an hour 1/2 from where I live) in the maze scene at the end of the movie. It is my favorite place to ski.

redrum...

I'm sleeping with the lights on tonight. But anyhow, the shining was based in Boulder right? Or was it the author lived there.

Edit: I just checked ... it's both!

It was at the Uni of Colorado rec centre, right! It was back in 1998 and we were staying with a friend who skated there and who signed us in.

I don't usually feel it until the second day, then I am a goner for about two days.

I've never done the Mountain Cup or Obersdorf. One year (after I get my act back together) I may try one. Isn't Obersdorf in Germany? That would make my soon-to-be ex-husband jealous--that I got to Germany before he did! I'd like to at least get to bronze before I spend big money to travel to a competition.

Yes, Oberstdorf is in southern Germany, in the Alps there. And the Mountain Cup (they are usually a week apart; this year the Oberstdorf competition is first, followed by the MC the following weekend) is in the French Alps.

In fact, you can skate Bronze at either competition even without the test - it is perfectly legit to skate up, and many people do, including my Husband, Sk8pix, and various others. Actually, I think technically we do in pre-Bronze dance, but then, our system is so very different in the UK that it's hard to tell!
