cutting music

Hi,

I've been asked to cut music for a boy's program. It is FS1 spotlight so 1.5 min. It is Darth Vader. The music is 1 min and 34 sec (including the fade out). I thought it would be cute to add 3-4 seconds of dialogue before the music starts. Rule says timing does not start until skater moves, so he won't start the program until the music part starts. But has there been any incidents where, either by ignorance or purpose, they start timing differently?

I would bet some local competition somewhere, that someone screwed up on the timing rule. One judge is assigned to "duration", and because it's the easy job, it's usually a newbie. But for the most part, they should know when to start the timer. I don't know whether or not it would be a good idea to check in and tell them that the music is long, and that the skater does not start at the beginning. (Would that just bring up scrutiny that he doesn't move? Would it not even be relayed to the person with the stop watch?)

Our ISI synchro team had music over the limited and merely stood still at the beginning. If it's a young boy, make sure he knows to stay very very still. Since the music is already a bit long, I'm not sure I'd add extra to it. Keeping it as is means no cutting required (it sounds like).

Also be careful if there's a "no vocals" rule. Speech at the front would breach such a rule.

Don't you get a +/- 10 second leeway? In that case you'd be fine. I'd make sure the dialog was worth it though....don't get too campy with it.

Is it possible to be too campy in a spotlight program?

That would have been cute to see! It shows extra creativity!

Thanks
I'll give them both versions. Their coach can decide.
