For a couple of months, I have been actively looking at skates for dd. I had her foot measured by the skating director a month or so ago who told me that dd's size 3, Riedell skates should fit her for a bit longer. I figured I had time to shop around. Anyway, I had dd's foot remeausred by the other guy who fits skates and her skates are about a 1/2 size too small!! Yikes. She's complained off and on about her toes touching the end of her skates and I kept telling her she still had some room to grow. Ummm NO! Dd is very picky about her feet and will complain if her sock isn't on right or if her foot isn't sitting just right in her shoes or if her feet are sweaty, ect. SO, my telling her to basically "suck it up" is not an unusual thing around here AND is the reason I had her foot measured in the first place. I wanted to be sure she wasn't being her usual picky self. Turns out, she wasn't crying wolf this time. I ordered her some new skates and they should be here the end of this week. Good grief... poor kid! I felt really bad when he told me she should be in a 4(with room to grow)!

Don't feel guilty, you had someone measure her foot and ordered the recommended size. Kids go through the strangest growth spurts. It seems like they grow in their sleep, overnight.

I had a similar situation: both kids measured for a Jackson size 5.5. Long story, but I ended up getting one twin's skates from an online store and one from the pro shop I like down here, about three weeks apart. At the pro shop, I asked for her foot to be remeasured. She needed a size 6! I saw both measures, so it had to be growth during that three-week period.

She put her old soakers on her new skates. I took the skates with the new soakers, which turned out to be her sister's. Poor kid - we had to pull out the insole and put down some thin cardboard just so she could fit her feet inside the skates for the hour of Synchro.

It happens, especially if they are skating continually. The snugness just keeps progressing, and they don't really notice sudden misery until it's REALLY BAD.

My DS mentioned a few times that his skates were snug. When I finally checked ... his toes were almost an inch past the end of the insoles It's funny how his skating improved after he got his new skates that fit.

I've done it too. Right before she took her first MIF tests, I discovered she was in skates a full size less than what she was measuring- her edges were so much better once the skates fit!

We see this a lot at my rink, right after summer break! Poor kids come back and they have had a growth spurt (seems to happen more in the summer than any other time), put their skates on and OUCH! I go through it as well, with hockey boy...he went through 2 skates in one season!

A few things here don't sound right to me. First of all, skates really shouldn't have 'room to grow' in them, you get them stretched when they need it instead. Second, I've never had skates the same size as my shoes, and neither have my 2 daughters. They are usually a size to a size and a half smaller. I'd be doubting the skate pro if he fitted my kids with 'room to grow' or went by their shoe size...

Thanks . I don't doubt the size is correct, I watched him measure her and I saw where her foot is. What I mean by "room to grow" is that we order her skates a 1/2 size larger then the exact size she should wear. We've never gone bigger then that and around here that is pretty standard for kids. She's currently in a size 3 in her Riedell skates and when I took her insole out the other day, her toe imprints are definately at the end(and as we now know! beyond!) of her insole. If I had her skates stretched now, I doubt it would make much difference since she's outgrown them by a 1/2 size already.

Also, she tried on a pair of Jackson size 3 skates and her feet were soooo crunched in them and the insole was actually slightly smaller then her size 3 Riedell skates. I know it sounds strange, but honestly, she does need the size 4 skate. I completely understand where you are coming from, heck my 8 yr old son is wearing a size 13.5 Easton hockey skate and wears a size 2 street shoe. Oh and my own Riedell skates are a size 6 and I weara 7.5 in a street shoe, so I do understand what you mean and why you would find this odd. I findit odd too, but she really needs this size. Thanks everyone! I'm so surprised because she has not outgrown her street shoes. Maybe Ishould check those too? LOL. Seriously tho, I bought her new sandals 3 weeks ago and she is in the same size she's been in for the last several months. Kinda of strange she has outgrown her skates by that much, but as I mentioned in another post, her foot is definately too long for her insoles.

Yup... she skates continually! Poor kid will likely have to wear the old skates for her comp in a few weeks. We'll see how she does in the new skates but I think her coach doesn't want to break in new skates for the comp. However, who knows if dd will skate better in skates that actually FIT. LOL

Mine did, like I said she took her MIF test in them after skating once or twice.

Were the new skates the same model she was in before or were they different? Dd is in Reidell Gold Medallion skates right now and moving into Jackson Freestyle skates. I am not sure if the stiffer boot combined with a new brand will throw her off. The GOOD thing is, I am pretty sure the blade on the jacksons will be the same length as the blade she currently uses. In fact, if they are the same length, we may just swap the blades. It'll be one less thing for her to get used to. KWIM?

Her new skates are here! YAY!!! Now comes the breaking in and adjusting to new skates period! I'm hoping to take her tomorrow so she can try them out on the ice. Hopefully our regular sharpener is there. He wasn't in when I picked them up, so I am hoping he is in tomorrow!

OK feel slightly guilty here. Had my 6 year old measured a couple of months ago and have been told that there is about 6 months worth of growing room in skates. However is is growing like a weed and skates do seem snugger and he is complaining they're too small and I haven't had time to get his feet measured. (Most convinient place locally are a big useless so need to go a bit further out).

Don't feel guilty. Dd tried her new skates today and then switched back to her olds skates for a bit. Appearantly her old skates being snug feels OK enough to skate in! LOL. She has to break in the new skates, so she will be switching back and forth as she does this. Hopefully it won't take her too long to adjust. I am hoping that having them heat molded will help her tons!

She skated in her new skates for an hour yesterday! She did get a blister, but she's doing ok in them! She's run through her programs a few times and is able to jump and spin in the new skates. Yippy! I am hoping they will be broke in enough to wear for her comp in a few weeks! She'll skate in them again to night for her LTS class and then I am hoping to get her to a rink either Friday night or Saturday morning.

Pop out the insoles and see where the toeprints are ... and, then have him stand on them. If his feet are longer or wider than the skates: they're too small. But, you may be able to have them punched or stretched.

Make sure that he's also putting his heels right at the back of the skates - if they're not there, he may be losing some room.

BTW: have his running shoes/other shoes gotten too small?
