Lace length

I've searched and could find nothing. What size laces do you usually need for UK size 5 skates. Would 108" be sufficient? I really don't remember what size I've got before!

thanks!

I've been there - the laces you have in the skates now can't be measured without undoing them and they're stretched out anyway, so don't bother.

My skates are approximately a US size 9, which I think translates to a UK size 7.
The 108" laces are just the right length, the 112" laces give me a bit of extra lace after tying.

You should be fine with the 108" laces. Once you're sure they're the right length, use a permanent marker to write the length on the blade soleplate or the sole of the boot.

Thank you! I'll go with the 108" laces. And I will remember that for next time!

For some reason the site I was ordering off didn't have 112" laces, only 108" or 120". 120" would be far too long!

You'd be tying the 120" ones around your ankle or tripping all the time!

The girls Jackson Glacier skates (rec skaters model) has the most incredibly long laces. I'm not joking - I end up teaching "How to Tie Your Laces" for these skates alone. I have them do a half-knot after the eyelets, then go around the ankle, make another half-knot, then lace up the hooks twice each to pick up the slack! I keep asking the parents to just buy new laces in the right length, but nooooo. LOL

you shouldn't tie laces round your ankles!
tie them in a triple knot if you must, but not round your ankles!
that would be very bad!!

don't do it; i know where you live

I like to buy the laces way too long and them tie big knots at the right length once laced up just right and then cut them off. The lazy way to perfect lacing!

Alright Lyle, how do I keep the knots from unraveling/untying? I'll bring scissors on Saturday and take care of all my students' too-long laces!

peanutskates - it's okay; I'm a professional and I know what I'm doing.

Depends largely on how tight you tie your skates. I use 100" laces on men's size 10 and can lace up all the hooks... Can you just take a current lace off and measure it?

I needed to know quickly as someone was ordering them for me and I didn't have my skates to hand to measure them.

Just 2 times through the loop. The trick is to pull tight. No tighter. No I really mean tight!!! Then the knot will stay

WOW. I have 100" laces on a women's (girls?) size 3 and if I put them all the way to the top hook I have to knot them because there isn't enough left for a bow.

Unfortunately I couldn't find 108" or 110" laces, so my replacements are 112" and they are just too long. I might try cutting them- but since I take my laces out to stretch the boots, that might be more trouble.

I wouldn't cut the tips off; I would take the slack down to the toe and tie/cut there. I've done it before, especially with sneakers, but the knots keep coming untied. Grrrr.

Keep in mind that lace length also depends on the bootmaker - Some boots, eg. Klingbeils, are cut with a very wide tongue and need much longer laces than, eg. Reidell for the same size foot.

Nylon laces come undone more often than cotton combo laces BUT you can also melt the cut ends easily to fuse the knot.

If you can't get the knot tight enough then just grab on eather side with a pair of pliers. Also so what if the knot comes out, cut the frizzled ends at an angle with scissors, wrap the new end with clear tape, relace the boot and cut and tie them off again.

I also bring the slack down to the toe, cut, knot & trim. Add one drop of superglue and it will never come untied. Promise.

I have had a difficult time finding 112". I'm barely able to tie a bow with 108 (I have big ankles & calves) and 120 is too long.

Does someone have a link where you can order 112"?

Rainbo has the 112" poly/cotton blend laces online for $3.95/pair.

Wow, I can't believe Casey wears 100 on men's size 10! I wear 120 and wear between a 5 and a 5.5 womens. I do have Klingbeil's so maybe that accounts for the difference? I was wearing 112, but I couldn't loosen the skate and "open" it wide enough to get my foot in without the gel sleeve bunching up (without the sleeve it was fine). I switched to 120s so I could really open my boot, and I don't really have a lot of extra (none really) at all around my ankle when the boot is tied up.

Rainbo Sports seems to have all the sizes, including 112 (http://www.rainbosports.com)

I have Klingbeils as well, and 100" allows me to lace all 4 sets of hooks. But I tie them really tight.

More recently I haven't been tying the top set of hooks or two so I can work on sit spins easier, but in general I find a nice snug boot to perform best after I get used to it... I think I'm a small bit crazy though... (just a small bit )...

Does anyone know of anywhere in the UK which sells 112" ones? I am a size 7 and I know that 108" won't be long enough, however I can only find 108" and 120", and 120" will be too long

I don't know what length Les Westaway sells, but I always get them - they seem to fit my skates very well! Ring him with your credit card number & he'll post.

I think it depends on the width as well i had a size 5d womens and i needed a 112 to be able to tie a good bow and lace all the way up now in the hinged skates i am trying to figure out the size of my laces too. I put an 84 inch in them and i have to tie 3 bows so i dont trip over the laces there are no hooks so i just tie 1 bow and knot it then 2 more bows. i think i need like a 72 in or smaller in those.
