View Full Version : Sealing rivets for better waterproofing?

Hi there everyone,

I've been skating for about 2 months in my own skates and it's becoming more and more obvious that my left skate always ends up soaking wet on the inside after every session. Now it definitely isn't sweat and after a bit of investigation I'm guessing it's ice/water somehow making it's way inside my boot through the riveted area on the bottom of my hockey skates.

Now I'm sick of wet feet and the amount of time it takes for me to dry off the inside of my skates during our colder months, is there a way I can seal up these areas on the bottom of my ice skates?

I'd try some RTV silicone sealant around the rivet areas and other places where water might enter. It's a fairly strong adhesive, and definitely waterproof.

Be sure to clean the areas to be protected before you apply it. Also, there are some plastics to which it is not as strongly bonded as it does with metal and other substrates. I'm not sure what material is used in a modern hockey skate mount, but it's still worth a shot.

RTV silicone will take at least 24 hours to cure.
