You know what? It behooves me that as many skating adults that are in the DC area, that there is no adult camps offered. Has it ever been attempted?Mt. Pleasant in Baltimore offered a day-long adult camp/seminar on a Sunday for a couple of years - once in July and once in June. And now they close at the end of April, so that's stopped, plus the ice has been a disaster (and I'm being nice, lol). But supposedly they are making repairs to the pipes et al this summer - we'll see. When they had the camp, quite a few DC area skaters attended.

But I haven't seen anything in the DC area....except I think the Wash FSC did an adult dance weekend last year or the year before, but of course, that was just for dancers.

There is progress on the Mt. Pleasant rink. We're hopeful for an October opening. There are pictures on the site.

Hubby and I went to a 1-day skate camp/seminar at The Gardens a few years ago...it was fun & exhausting! I would go again (as would the other ladies from my rink) but they stopped having it.

And the one at Aston PA---whatever happened with that???

I don't think that we should disparage someone for giving information about children's camps in a mainly adult forum. Just because most of us are adults does not mean that we a) do not have children or b) know of someone to whom the information could be relevant. Furthermore, most area workshops will allow adult skaters.

Though I personally cannot use the information Query provided, I will thank him for compiling the information.

I've re-marked the Northwest one as questionable. Glad to here they may re-open eventually. Hope people give the new management opens it a chance.

There are several adult "camps" and a fair number of adult classes run. Like the ice dance ones at Wheaton Ice Arena I tried to cajole people on this board to attend last here. (Alas, they only ran one week-long ice dance class this year, instead of 3, and it was last month.)

Some of the ones mentioned appear to be open to adults. If ages aren't mentioned, you can call the rink.

If you can put together a large enough group, virtually any rink happily run a class, with a coach you select, or one they select. It's a little harder if you want to be the only ones on the ice - maybe it helps if you can schedule a month or more in advance. You can also rent the ice time, and select everything yourself.

I think part of the problem around DC is that there are so many rinks that any one rink has trouble putting together specialty classes. For example, to the best of my knowledge, Wheaton is the only one that has come close to successfully (from a financial perspective) running ice dance classes in recent years. Others try it, generally several rinks at exactly the same time, like summer saturdays, but give up when they see how few people come to any one rink for such a class. Of course, they almost all run the most standard ISI or USFSA classes, up to some level.

If you click to the rinks' own pages (links found on my page), you will see a lot of them run a few less intense (not week long, but one day or weekly one hour) specialty classes. You can find classes on "ballet for figure skaters", exercise and stretch and yoga classes for figure skaters, choreography, ice theater, synchro, spin, school figures, costuming, etc. Some of the skating clubs run such stuff too.

What none of the rinks know how to do is advertise. They think it is enough to put a sign up in their own rink, a week or two before the class. If they put it on a web page, that page is often only usuable if you have a computer configuration that matches that of the web page designer. They keep changing web page addresses and rink names and phone numbers too.

In the entire United States, a reasonably large country, there might only be 1-3 urban areas (Boston, possibly LA and NYC) with more social and ballroom dance classes and events (dozens, maybe hundreds, every day of the year), in part because they are better organized and better at advertizing. I get that some government rinks don't feel they have to, but the private ones don't do any better. I only found the classes that fit my criteria that were mentioned on the rinks' own web pages - but some of the rinks don't mention their classes there. They believe the best way to recruit students is to keep the classes secret.

I'm planning to open up a small part-time web design and other computer-help business in the next few months. I may contact a few of the local rinks to see if they want help, with that or with other marketing suggestions (of which I know little but they must know less - how is that even possible with such a $1-2 million investment?). Problem is, a lot of them already have extremely fancy looking pages. They just don't communicate much of anything.

Northwest has no plans to re-open. It's just sitting there.
