What else would you want to do in Skating besides skate? [Archive]

Not all of us are kids. If I could, I'd start out as a CanSkate coach (most of those kids are precious and the adults are fun), then I'd progress as a Level 1 coach to then become a choreographer which would tie in with my music know how and ability. For now, I'm still waiting to at least skate at 1/10 of my music ability. I'm no where close now but it's really fun to try.

Well you don't have any of my choices listed
- data specialist and/or accounting (tabulating scores)
- competition/test volunteer (was "ice captain" last week and enjoyed it!)

I wouldn't want to be a judge; as I told my coach, I don't "see fast enough". I also tend to be a perfectionist and that wouldn't be popular!

I know how hard most coaches work and how little they are paid - NO THANKS!

I picked the young skater. I already teach LtS. I have no illusions about my ability to work w elites and no interest in judging. However, I would enjoy working w someone w talent.

My first choice is actually not on the list. I would most like to work w a talented dedicated adult skater.

When I have more time, I plan to pursue judging again. I did some trial judging and have done Basic Skills judging and was told I had a good eye. And they need more judges round these parts. I just couldn't do all that traveling with my job and kids...maybe now that the kids are up and out....

I volunteer time as the photographer for club events. I have access to some nice cameras and lenses here at work and enough experience to do a good job. Proceeds from print sales benefit the club.

I have served as a judge for very low-level competitions held here, but I don't enjoy that. I always feel like I might miss something and mis-score a competitor.

Also, unlike others, I have NO interest in coaching.

I already coach LTS, am test chair for my club, and am an official accountant for USFS competitions. And I do some judging for Basic Skills competitions whenever I'm asked.

In fact, when I look at the division of time, the percentage I spend actually skating is the smallest portion of the total.

I wouldn't want to do any of the above, either, although I wouldn't mind coaching adults, if I had the skill level to do so. I loved helping my friends understand things that they just weren't getting.

What I'd like to do is be a knowledgeable boot/blade professional. I love hand-sharpening my own blades, and I wouldn't mind learning how to use a machine as well. I'm pretty detail-oriented, and I would *hate* to ruin a pair of blades, so I'd take great pains to get it right. Same with boots---I'd go to great lengths to fit the right pair of boots to the right pair of feet, and make sure the skater knew how to properly use and care for them. It just astounds me how many (usually new, or recreational) skaters don't know any of this, and simply aren't taught.

I teach LTS Groups. I'd love choreography; it's fun to improvise any type of music on the spot, be it Contemporary or Classical. It helps to become a well-rounded skater.

I'd also add the artistic elements - armwork/head expression and presentation way before putting together a program because for some skaters it's hard concentrating on both arm movement and their program elements. Also, understanding and studying your program music: what is it really saying? Happy? Sad? What emotion(s) do you feel while skating it? Tempo: Fast? Slow? When competing, "forget" the judges (with all due respect : ) and go with your music.

I'd love to judge and to chorepgraph. I think in choreography, seriously... particularly for Synchro.

Ask my coach -- my placements for every team we've ever skated against have agreed perfectly with the judges.

I'm with you, I'd love to judge (actually, referee, but apparently you have to be a credentialed judge to do that) and choreograph. I tend to think I should be a better skater first though (at least, have taken and passed some darn tests!).

I'm the same... I've always wanted to drive the Zamboni (or at least ride in one.) :P Not sure I want to drive it to a Burger King though. (Those who know me know that I'm not much of a fast food person. My only exception to that is probably the very occasional McD's...)

I don't know if I would do anything else BUT skate. I'm just the type that doesn't believe in quitting skating, go have get pregnant and letting my daughter do the skating for me. I would be missing out on too much fun!!! :mrgreen:

I think everybody should get to ride on a zamboni at least once in their lives. I managed it once. It helps if you know the zamboni driver really well.

I don't think there is anything I'd do other than skate. Maybe a little coaching. I think I have a pretty good eye for technique. Every once in a blue moon somebody will want me to coach them. Besides taking away from my own skating, it would make the real coaches mad.

Whoever was saying about how hard coaches work and how little they get paid doesn't live around here. Coaches can make upwards of $100 an hour. Some of them make more money than I do. The good coaches are mostly limited by the amount of load they are willing to take on.

I would definitely like to try coaching lower level skaters, particularly adults. I am not so sure I'd be any good with tiny tots or total beginners, but once they're moving around I think I'd be okay.

I'm currently training in judging our equivalent of LTS, and getting a better eye doing it. But I think I'd rather coach. I also like making skating costumes, and would enjoy doing that. I'm also a musical sort of person, which would come in handy.

Around here the coaches coach, cut music, choregraph. And in my case I could also design and make the costumes.

Right now though I am too busy skating.:D

I would actually love to coach beginning adults. I've done it at public sessions a zillion times just because they asked me and it was a lot of fun! Once at Wollman Rink in NYC this guy learned proper stroking and he was incredibly excited - he was zipping around the rink and I had to calm him down and teach him how to stop, lol. He was a hairdresser and offered me a free haircut, but I had to go back to FL the next day :mrgreen:

I already teach learn to skate so put that down because I'm working on getting my next level of credentials. I started out originally as a data specialist. I've done board and management work. I guess what else I want to do in skating besides skate is..............skate more.
