Okay, my lutz has been really great...until 1-2 days before competition - State Games! Now, my back picking leg is lifted way too high, even when my upper body is staying upright! Any mental notes to help! Exaggerate the knee bend? Mercy me! Help!

Think of reaching backward, DOWN the stairs.

A high free leg means slamming you are going to slam your toepick into the ice. You will have no flow out of the jump if you make Place your toe into the ice and let the back outside edge carry you into the jump. So my mental image for this jump is "flow". Think about flowing backwards instead of jumping up.
