How old were you when you started skating?

In my 40s.

How many years have you been skating for?

Several. I am now in my 50s, and don't particularly want to be more precise than that!

Started at 27, just doing group classes and public sessions for 5 years.
Quit for 5 years, came back at 37 and now I'm 41, so. . . I've skated a total of 9 years.

I've been skating sice age 4 (age 2 if you count the double runners on the frozen pond). I'm now 31 so 29 years total.

I skated occasionally (and badly) as a kid.

I started skating regularly during the winters at 16, started lessons at 18.

How long, let's see ... 28 years less 10 year gap ... 18 years.
Coaching for the last 10 years or so. 8-)

Put all my kids on the ice at 18 months, but they started lessons at 3 and 4 years old.

46 years.

Started at 6, quit at 14, started back again at about 30 and have never looked back. In between 14 and 30 I would skate a few times a year and kind of bang around (setting up bad habits I am sure) but couldn't wait to really get back to it once I had a bit more time, and a bit more money.

5 years

Started at 21 and I'm now 26. Although I had been skating on occasions before the age of 21 and could do crossovers forwards and backwards (one way only), a bad three turn and a 'did-it-leave-the-ice?' three jump.

Started nearly 5 months ago. So five months. Haha. But I'm already doing single jumps so that's good I guess.

Started at 38, am now 43, so 4+ years, if we don't count the time I was off ice with the broken ankle and getting back to where I was before that.

I started skating when I was 13 and kept skating until I was 18. I came back to skating as an adult at 23 and have been back for 4 years.

So, I guess I've been skating a total of 9 years.

just starting my 4th week, can't get enough to it, nothing makes me more happier right now.

how does a person gauge their progress? I can do advanced crossovers and skate backwards, need to learn backwards crossovers and hockey stop really then ill feel more satisfied.

I have been in love with the ice for three months now (one month I was completely off ice! *cries*), about 3 times a week. Still no classes...I am 11 years old now. :yum:

What do you mean "advanced"?

weeeeelllll, my answer is rather nebulous. My father & grandfather were both mega-mega-hockey guys at Yale (my dad still plays hockey a couple times a week, at age 71!) so dad had us out on the frozen pond across the street, with sawed-down hockey sticks & pucks, when we were very little. But skating opportunities were few and far between, and aside from a vague memory of "push, push, glide" that must have been from a lesson before I was 5, I never took lessons until I was about 30. Did a couple of LTS sessions (6 weeks each?), then took time off to get pregnant & become a mom. My daughter will be 5 in September so I thought it was time to take some more lessons (just finishing up a LTS session this week and I expect to sign up for another and do a few private lessons). So I guess as far as skating with actual lessons--just a few months. But I've been comfortable on skates for years; I just couldn't ever do anything but glide and trip around.

I started skating when I was 7. I'm 22 now. So. . .15 years? Something like that. Geez, you'd think I'd have made it to the Olympics by now. . .so many years on the ice. :P

I started taking lessons right after I turned 17. I'm now 28, so I guess that would be 11 years. It's weird though, I can't remember a time in my life when skating wasn't a part of it. It seems like I've always been doing it, even though it's been less than half my life. Weird.
