Another member of the forum (Mintypoppet) sent these links to me for the patterns:

http://www.uq.net.au/~zzbarneg/dancepatterns.htm

Depending on what country you're in, not all of those apply (I'm in the US). Your best bet is a rule book or the PSA dance patterns book. (see if someone has an old rule book laying around--the patterns haven't been changed in several years, so you could pull the pattern pages out & use those.

Is icedance.com still around? They used to have loads of dance patterns :)

yes. Check the technical reference section under

www.ice-dance.com

Their list of patterns include only the ISU patterns (roughly starting with USFS Pre-Silver and higher)

The best ice dance pattern website i've found is:

http://www.uq.net.au/~zzbarneg/dancepatterns.htm

wow, that is the best site I've ever seen. I've printed off a few of the roller dances to try out for a change of pace.

About learning them from paper. I'm one of those people that learns the steps off ice from paper and then goes to a coach for a lesson. I wasted too much time following the coach around the rink and hearing left, right, two, three, now turn, it went in one ear and out the other.

From paper, I at least know the basic feet, the timing is all off but we clean that up on ice before we ever turn on the music. It also shows the layout on ice, I need to know the shape of the lobes or in my terminology "boards or centre" as to which direction I'm headed.

Take one of the patterns like the dutch waltz and just follow the feet at first, LFI, RFI, LFI etc in the middle of your living room. Then try to add the counts. Some of the abbreviations are strange but ask us. They're mostly about crossing feet in front or behind.

Although I do it all the time it's very dangerous on publics, and that is to skate around with the dance diagram in your hand and to read and skate at the same time.
