We talk a lot about boots and blades and give our opinions. How about showing off what we have? I thought this was a fun little idea, and I hope it isn't considered too spammish. Mods, feel free to take care of this if it is. Here are my Teri's:

My skates are hideous right now. I have them dyed beige for synchro, but nicks make the white show through. Also, when I compete I tape my laces, and when you tear off the laces, some of the beige paint comes off, too. So my skates are having a bit of an identity crisis right now. :)

Why not? You ashamed of your skates? ;)

Sometimes you gotta say... "What the heck?" 8-)

With that in mind... *ahem* Here are MY purple Harlicks! (Aren't they beauuuuties???) The blades are just plain 'ol MK Professional. (Can't justify to myself to get bling-bling gold plated MK Gold Stars except for vanity.) And before you start... 95% of the the cost went towards making of the boot and the orthotics that are these beauties. They fit like slippers!!! AAAAAAHHH!!! )

Interesting.

I would have been happy with plain, normal white. Stupid gender stereotyping judges. This is why I support Johnny Weir. If anyone can change the color issue, it's him, by sheer flamboyance alone.

Okay, so perhaps the fact he's an awesome skater will help too.

You can't possibly be including mine. I love my Teri's honest, but I'm really beating them, and they already show it....

I like :) How do you find the off-set hooks? I was thinking about those for my custom Dance Harlicks (when I finally get back to skating PROPERLY!).

Lynne --

I've got them on my Klingbeils (dance boots) and the only thing I use them for is as a "loop holder." But then I only use 3 of the 4 hooks, even though the skates are broken in. What I do is after I tie the bow in the laces (after looping around the first 3 sets of hooks), I put the loops of the bow over the offset hooks and pull the bow tight, making sure that the knot part of the bow is snug. Then tie another bow and double-knot it.

Seems to hold a bit snugger and not work loose as easily.

I have the same skates as Vesperholly (Klingbeils), but with 2 dance notches cut in & also w/ dance blades. Also not nearly as pristine as hers!! (must have shot that when they were brand new, yes?)

Mine are Tan Klingbeils with black Ultima Ascend dance blades. I've got the higher heel for dance as well as a wide "U" shaped cut-out instead of the dance notch. They're also lower cut in back to help with toe pointing. I think also I had them cut a bit lower all the way around, plus I still only use 3 rows of hooks.

Jen, if you can, please post a photo of your skates! I'd like to see the back cut down (how low), and also the U cut instead of the V notches! This is my 2nd pair of Klingbeils & when I got them I noticed the heels were not as high as my last pair--I'm wondering if when I get the backs cut down, if another layer of leather can also be added on to the heels? Probably not, but maybe I'll ask......I *might* be going down this Saturday!

Kevin, take a closer look; it's skate tape!

I don't have a pic of mine nor the time to get one now, but they look like I jump, which I do not. It's all the little kids cutting my boots up :x.

My former coach's boots looked like they had been shredded. Her two cats did a job on them!

Off set hooks are a Klingbeil feature, but I'm sure you could request them from another manufacturer.

Klingbeils with Ultima Protege blades. I've had them less than a year and I'm a wimp, so they're pretty pristine. I like the offset hooks--I have skinny feet and ankles and will take all the help I can get to keep my feet secure in my boots. The lambswool tongue is awesome too.

Karen, you'll need to upload the pictures from your PC onto a free online hoster like photobucket etc.
I personally use http://www.imageshack.us/ - then it gives you a link. You will need to copy the link then edit your post and wherever you want to put the pictures you click on the icon below the -> looks like a picture of mountains with a yellow background - then post the link in the box that comes up. HTH!

WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS IMAGES WHICH MAY BE DISTRESSING TO SOME VIEWERS ( especially any members of the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Ice Skates. )

These are my Graf Galaxy boots with 20+ years old Phantom blades.

They're pretty scary looking right now, although not so bad with the skate tape covering them. I peeled the tape back off one so you could see the surgery.

Remember that this is a transition phase. Once I am 100% sure I have them right, I intend to cap them with a leather patch lined with a gel bunion protector. If I can do a decent job of it they shouldn't look anywhere near as bad. If they still look lousy I can always wear boot covers.

woahhHHHHH!! If you cut it with splits like that, the boot is going to split open, right? That's why they normally put stitches around the outlines of holes and things, to stop splitting.

not in a spot like that. If it was a high-stress area (where boot bends at ankle for jump landing or something) it'd be more of a worry.

A friend of mine did the exact same thing to her boots for bunions, without the patch to hide it. It worked, it wasn't pretty, but it worked. Then she got Klingbeils which were built with the bunion in mine, so no more need for slicing and dicing.

As I say, this is a work in progress. The slits are only there until I get the comfort level right. Afterwards I will cut the slitted area off leaving a hole with rounded edges. Gel bunion protectors will be glued in from the inside and a white leather patch over the outside. This will help support the boot and it shouldn't split from that point.

I told you it wasn't pretty .....

Doesn't Riedell have something like that on their boots in the pinkie toe area, in the model with the cork bottom and lace lock things? They look like little vents.

One thing that my insrtuctor has never had to ask me to do was to bend my knee more. I think that encouraged the creases.

The creases are nice in the outside cuff and the head-on view also shows how the cuffs now angle to the outside. I don't know how typical that is, but it seems to accommodate my slightly bowed legs.

Ok, here are my skates! They are Gam 400's with an Ultima Synchro blade. I got the boots at the end of May 2005 and the blades are from June 2004. The reason for the big white patch around the ankle...we spray or dye our boots beige for synchro. I tape my laces for competition in case they come undone or a hook breaks, and when I take the tape off it removes some of the spray. I could avoid this by preparing the leather more before I spray, but this way the paint is easier to get off if I ever want my skates white again. So before each competition, I just touch my skates up with a bottle of leather spray.

Bill, you're due for new skates.
Think about it: these are the only important pieces of equipment we need - you can cheap out on everything else!

I took pretty good care of my old Klingbeils, but they were due to be replaced.
The tongues were wearing out, I was getting lace bite, and the tops were splitting apart.

Don fixed up my old ones, so I'll use them for teaching, especially outdoors.
I had my old Pattern 99's laying around doing nothing, so I had them mounted on the old Klingbeils.
(Actually felt pretty good on the ice, once I gave the blades a quick stoning.)

They look like this:

This is why I need new boots...when I started skating again, I hadn't and didn't break in my boots properly and now I need new skates after 6 months.:giveup: Luckily, the will hold up through my test and through breaking in the new pair. They are not horrible, but I wanted to order the new ones BEFORE I absolutely needed new ones.... I've got new ones, old ones..

Here's a stroll down memory lane. The bottom pair of Reidells I bought in the late '70s for about $75 dollars.

The middle pair of Riedell Gold Stars with Coronation Aces was purchased ~2001 for a little over $400.

My current pair of Gold Stars (top) was purchased last fall for over $500. They also have Coronation Ace blades.

Graf edmontons, coronation ace blades, skated on since september. Bit too hard for me, obviously, but it's the only thing in the graf line being sold in my area at the time, apart from the absolute beginner's skate "graf davos". And risport and edea didn't fit my feet, especially the bone growths, and I didn't dare to order Jacksons without trying them on and without refunds in case it went wrong, so I went with these.

You can see the dents from denting out on the left boot. Without much success btw, I tried it at 2 different skate shops (one of them being supposedly the best in the Netherlands) without success, so if anybody has better ideas on how to make space for my second pair of ankle bones lower down? I use gel pads, which isn't 100% ideal either.

I read this on the net a while back, can't remember the source so it's not a verbatim quote

"Get the blades off and stick them in the oven for 5 minutes, take them off and put them straight on, they'll be a bit more malliable when hot, they should cool down around the shape of your foot a little better"

Is it just me, or have the backs of the heel been getting lower over the years?

Would that be down to styles of skates, or his spins and stuff getting lower and therefore needing lower heels?

He said the last two pairs were both the same style and are only a few years apart in age, and there's a clear drop in leather height on the heel... Not sure why they'd change the styles so significantly in such a short space of time...

I can understand that you'd choose to buy a different type of skate with your spins getting lower, but when it's the same model I'd expect it to look the same (or similar).

Actually, I think mom's 12 yr old Risport Super Cristallo are a little higher than the current Risport RF3 Super too. And her previous pair, late 60's, was MUCH higher. Boots have definitely been growing lower over the years. I think part of it are probably new manufacturing technologies for leather and plastics.

Thanks, but Graf Edmontons are heat mold skates, and they were heat molded thrice already.
I've been actually thinking to blow dry them with heat around the spot that needs molding but according to the skateshop owner that won't help... but then again, after denting out they return to the place as well. :(
And I had them dented out at two different stores, one of which has a special machine for it and everything.

Nice size comparison, onlyhappyonice! Mind you, the little ones have a habit of growing...

Is it just me or does the photo make it look like someone's chopped the end off the back of your blade (rather than being a commercial dance blade)? The picture of your boot leaning solo against the wall seems to show a *very* short blade - even shorter than the heel of the boot itself?

Riedell's been redesigning their line one or two models at a time over the years. Partially, it's to use new materials like heat molding or different padding. They also changed the heel height, hooks, and the back of the boot. The lower boot back allows the skater to point their foot without getting that "bite" on the achilles. (Mostly it was to respond to competition from Jackson in the US market. Jackson boots have had many of those features for years.)

Good eye, they are shortened tails on the blades, they are a mk21 dance blade.... as I'm still in LTS I'm still new to the world of blades so I'm only now learning the difference in rocker sizes etc etc.

Mercedeslove: OMG, those are my exact skate guards! I thought I was being all original when I chose those colors, but...well, I guess I am in my rink, but how funny to see someone else with them! 8O

Anyway, here's a link to my skates (I'm on the left in the picture). They are custom lightweight Harlicks in holiday tan with Coronation Comet blades, which are great. The bottoms have gold, purple, and blue glitter specks sealed in, and I absolutely love them! They're almost 1 year old (got 'em last May after my last custom Harlick's, which lasted me 8 years, finally broke down).

Thanks for the explanation. I'd say that Jackson don't have it quite right just yet, as my dance coach and the judge complain that I'm not pointing my toes enough in my Jackson competitors (freestyle boots but I've not made my mind up about dance yet) and my achilles is telling me I'm pointing them too much.
I can't imagine that many of the manufacturers have got it right for dance yet, as all the dancers at my rink cut their boots down at the back to get the proper amount of pointing. (I'm too chicken of screwing my boots up, I've still not got over the price tag and it was nearly 4 years ago that I bought them).

I wonder why certain heel heights. I often notice how short the Riedell heels are in particular. I started in Rose's, a Canadian bootmaker out of Cambridge, Ontario, which had a high heel come standard. When I moved on to Harlicks and then Klingbeils, I always asked for a custom height heel of 2" (I measured the Rose's). I specifically did this after reading how Kurt Browning changed boots and lost all his triples, and finally figured out that it was a change in heel height that did it. Not that I have any triples to lose, mind you!

If you wanna go into freestyle, specifically jumps, you're better off with freestyle blades.

I can finally post a pic of mine. I picked them up today (ordered them Dec 27th). I feel like Frankenstein, but did manage about half of a public session this afternoon without causing injury to myself (save for the sliced finger inflicted by the nylon lace slipping across my pinky as I was tightening things up...yeeouch!).

Custom Harlick's with a MK Pro blade. It's going to take me some time to adjust to having a skate on my foot that really fits (my old ones were a size too small and at least a width too narrow). Now I can get myself back into lessons after having stopped in December when the old skates became just too unbearable to use anymore. Woo!

Yes, I wondered the same thing. Last thread from Kevin was "Skates on a Plane", almost a year ago.

Hey, all,

It's been a while since I have posted (but I am still skating). And I have a very serious question.

I am moving to Korea in three weeks, and I'll be living in Seoul,

Good luck to you Kevin, wherever you are!
