View Full Version : What do you say when you take off for a jump?

Of all the jumps I can do so far (waltz, toe loop, loop, sal, half flip), I only let out his noise of assertion when I take off for loop. I think the loop really needs that because I feel I have to literally lift myself up. What about you?

As this is a family-oriented board, I can't answer this question ;).

Seriously, I'm a dancer and the only time I jump now is when I'm teaching Freestyle classes. I can still do through Lutz- I think the doubles would come back if I worked at it for a couple weeks, but I don't have that kind of ice time. These days, when I take off for a jump, I'm usually thinking to myself, "I DO have my teaching skates on... right?" My teaching skates have Coronation Dance blades, which have just enough of a toepick to land on. My regular skates have MK Dance blades. I've learned the hard way that I can't land more than a sal in those skates.

Well, I think at a million miles an hour of all the things I need to do first. Then at the takeoff I think and say "Uuuuup!" My coach was a big one for sounds on skills and jumps and I guess I've learned his technique. I found my "Uuuuup" noises really help on the loop and axel.

Breathe! Cause I tend to hold my breath while I jump. I swear I'm gonna pass out one of these days!

This question cracked me up this morning.......and in case you all think I've lost my mind in cartoonland, I'll explain.

My friend and I were trying to get the timing right on the salchow entry, so
on the 3-turn entry, we would say, "Mickey mouse", then turn and hold the edge for another "Mickey mouse" before jumping.

This actually worked pretty well for us......and I find myself still doing this for salchows!

Yeah, I tend to hold my breath too when I loop

I can do it. I say it going into the jump and on the take off.

I usually say "Up"! Weird but it works, and my coach says it too (along with "errrrr" or "arms in" or tsk, depending on the jump! Sometimes I get a "YES")

"wait" The slight delay helps ensure I'm on an edge before take off.

"Please let me not kill myself doing this." That's only for axels and double jumps though. ;)

"I'm going to die". Seriously though, I worked with Carolyn Silby on this...........since I tend to choke with the music. She suggested that I choose one word that describes how I'd like the jump to look. I have a different word for each jump. I also limit the "technical" to 3 words.........and "head up" usually wastes two of them!!!

For the axel, I used to tell myself, "Relax, you're not going to fall. Lift then rotate."

For the 2toe, it was "Relax. Don't rush the entrance. Keep it straight."

For the 2loop, it was "Relax. Rotate upper body with lower."

Probably not - but mine are so tiny that practically before I've jumped, I'm going, "Oh [expletive!] that wasn't what I meant to do!"

I'm not sure i always say something or think about jumps...

For salchows (and esp d salchows) i always think, "I hate this jump"

For flips I think reach back and go straight up

For loops i always think down and up!

Usually...I have to get my mind off of all the crap at school. I swear...jumping has become my therapy and stuff.

Nothing. I'm trying to relax and just go with the jump!

I've caught my self making funny noises when I actually land a jump (mine are only half jumps). i think I'm holding my breath and then letting it all out once my feet are back on solid ice.
